need info on getting started asap

Hi my name is Tom and I have always wanted to work in the medical field, cuz helping people is my lifes calling.

I want to become a RN some day I am 18 and currently taking my ged course. I will be done some time in march I think. Anyway I havent done to much research on what I need tobecome a RN cuz I planned on finishing highschool later this year, but I had to move and the highschool in the area need 21 credits. I would have stuck it out but I would have been in highschool for anouther year and a half with the new credit system>

I am going to talk with the counselors at my community college that I am going to now sometime thusday or friday those are my only days off. I would like to have a general understanding of what classes I need to have before I can start my RN classes? Also about how long would it take to complete the entire RN course? From what little I have been able to look up in the 30 min between school and when I have to go to work every day it looks like a 2-3 year course.

I am sorry if I have bad grammer, spelling, or punctuation I just got off a 11 hour work day in a 63 hour work week and I am really really tired>

HI! What you need to take all depends on what school you are going to try and get into. When you go to talk to a counselor they will probably give you a list of the required courses for the degree. How long it will take will depend on a couple of things, first - you will need to find out if the college you want to attend has a wait list to get in the Nursing program. I work full time and I spent 2 years taking my pre-req's and then another 2 doing the nursing classes. I could only handle about 8-9 credit hours per semester with my job, but everyone is different! Most colleges do, but in the meantime you can work on your pre-requisite courses. At my community college the pre-req's included: Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Psych 101, developmental psych, sociology, english 101, and some other elective courses. I think most schools require the sciences. Good luck!

My school requires that you are

-CPR Certified

-You take/pass the "NLN Pre-Admission Test"

-Submit to a Criminal Background Investigation (that you pay for yourself)

-Health requirements may include: physical examination, screening tests, immunizations, blood titers, and/or urine drug screen.

Accademically they require

-Minimum GPA 2.5 (most of the students that apply have 3.5 or higher)

-ENG101 with a C or higher

-MTH060 with a C or higher

-BIO101 with a C or higher

-CHM101 with a C or higher

All schools are different. Just make sure you write all your questions down before you talk to a counselor. Find out all your options, discuss a plan of action with the counselor.(Each step you must take to reach your goal)

Best of Luck to you!!!!

Ok Thanks for the info you two. I hope I can get a meeting with my counselors some time to day and sign up for my pre RN classes for winter if possible or atleast spring quarter.

the best way for you to find the information you are looking for is to go to the website of the school of nursing you would be interested in going to. they should list on the their site exactly what requirements you need to fulfill to get into their nursing classes. at the top of this page on the far right is a "links" button. run your mouse over it and another box appears. click on boards of nursing. go to the board of nursing website for the state in which you now live. once there, look for a link on that site to a list of approved nursing schools. that is how you will find a list of the nursing schools near you. check the closest ones out. each school, however, usually has different requirements. some will admit you with a gpa of at least 2.0; others want a higher one. some want you to have all your science pre-requisites out of the way before starting nursing classes; others will let you take them along with the nursing classes. some want you to become a cna first; others don't. see what i'm getting at? they all vary greatly in their requirements. one thing that is pretty universal, however, is that you have to take human anatomy and physiology, microbiology and chemistry. good luck in your search.
