Hello to everyone. I hope someone who knows will be able to help me out. I wanted to shift career. I graduated BSN 1995 but did not get to take the local board in my country. I am presently here in the US, teaching HS science. Will I be qualified to take CGFNS after 15 years of not practicing my bachelor course?please help.thank you.

thank you so much for your reply.to be honest with you, i would not be terrified to work full time back in the hospital for a simple reason that I am doing the same job as part time in 2 a caregiving centers, so I am pretty much prepared to be back in a hospital setting...and besides that, I've also been doing a lot of volunteer work in the hospital...

With all due respect, working as a volunteer or unlicensed caregiver is NOT the "same job" as working as a registered nurse under your own license. The fact that you even think that tells me that you should NOT start work as an RN without further education.

I hardly think it's "mean" to state this. As nurses, our responsibility is the patient's welfare, not yours. Setting loose someone who trained in ANY field 15 years ago and never gained any experience, does not sound wise. I certainly would not take my family to any medical/nursing professional like that if I could help it. It's nothing personal, but you would be responsible for peoples' lives.

thanks Ginger's Mom.i know that i've been away for a long, long, long time, that's why, i've been volunteering so that i could see what is going on.because i may not know everything, but atleast be aware of what is happening. i have friends and relatives who are nurses too ( but i wonder, they are not very much aware of what i should do) in order for me to get licensed.however i will take your advice.maybe take a refresher course first and then take a review classes, then take the test.does that sound right?anyway, thank you, i appreciate your suggestion.have a great day!

You may find that they will not let you take a refresher course without being licensed. Best people to talk to are the people at the board of nursing in the state you plan to work in and apply to

Talk to your state Board of Nursing and find out whether they will even consider you eligible for licensure, since it's been so long since you completed school, and follow their direction. Best wishes.

well, i think it is mean to me.that's why i'm here, seeking for help.not to judge what i do.suggestions not criticism.i am very aware of what is going on in the medical world in the past and the present.this is upsetting.

Nobody is being mean or judging you. You have been out of school for a decade and a half and things have changed since you graduated. If you've been out of school for 1 year, you're considered out dated. If you have never been licensed as a nurse and never practiced then you have ZERO PAID EXPERIENCE. What was kindly sugested to you about taking refresher courses would be a wise decision on your part. It will only benefit you.

I agree with the previous poster, if you feel that you can just jump in there with out any experience and graduated 15 years ago is a scary thought. You have nothing beneficial to offer your patients at this time. I for one wouldn't want anybody in your situation to work on me or my loved one with out taking some sort of refresher courses, or some sort of skills evaluation. Nursing is forever evolving and we learn something new everyday. Take a step back, think things through, and move forward by taking those suggestions into consideration..

Working as a caregiver isn't the same as working as a nurse. You may be aware of what is going on in the medical world from a caregivers perspective part time, but you're not aware what's going on in the medical world from a licensed nurses prospective which are two totally different things.

Please don't be angry at any poster here, they are just suggesting to you what should be done in your situation. You worked hard for your degree, and once you get licensed you don't want to jeopardize it or even worse jeopardize a patients life because you feel you know so much about nursing that you can just go work as nurse with out getting updated on medical practices here in the U.S.

Good Luck
