**need help** kaplan online adn program in florida

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi Everyone,

Hope that all is well. I am glad that I came across this forum as I have been researching nursing programs and schools for the past 4 months now and I am totally confused!!!

Just to give some background on myself. I have a BA in education. I taught High School History (many years ago) and have been home since as as stay at home mom of 4 beautiful little angels. I have decided to go back to school and get a second degree in Nursing (my main love). I live in Florida and I have been searching the programs from the community colleges (which have approx a 2year wait) to private colleges (some have a 20 month wait or the others are very expensive 50k). I recently came across Kaplan University and their online ADN program here in Florida. I was wondering if anyone was in this program and had some info.

The program works great for me since the classes are all online (because I still have one little one home here with me) and than I am being told that the clinicals are 2 times a week (local) for 10 hours a week.

I am just very nervous about different things that I am hearing in regards to NLN accredited, BIN accredited etc. I just want to make sure that I can do the program, complete Kaplans' requirements and than be able to sit for the NCLEX. The tuition is about 25k. It is a bit higher than the cc but I can get in and start this March 09 and be done in 14 months. This is also good for me because all of the other programs require 2 years of full time (8am-4pm) (Mon-Fri)

Sorry for going on, I just have so many questions and I want to make sure that I am making the right choice with Kaplan before I go any further. Thanks so much for any help that you can offer. Good luck and take care:)

I like to plan ahead. I was trying to get an idea of when I will actually graduate. =) your probably in my classes because I am taking those classes as well. I started Feb 3rd as well. Well they told me for my A & P courses that I need to submit the syllabus for each course for reevaluation. I called my previous college and they said they would email it to me but they haven't done so, I will have to call them again today. Did you try to do that? The nurse advisor told me that I shouldnt be registered for NU 101 and 105 if I dont get the A & P credits. I dont want to take it over either.

I emailed my old A & P professor and aked him if he could email me a copy of the syllabus and he said "NO". I was really shocked he said that because he is such a nice person. I guess I will have to figure out another way. I was also told that I should register for A & P next term by the first term advisors, but when I called the Chicago nursing office they said its ok if I register for NU 101(the 1st clinical course) and 105 since there is no pre-reqs for them. I have been also trying to figure out when I would graduate. I will probably call the nursing office today to find out and I will let you know or you can let me know if you find out first.

Hey,

I made a chart, and figured if i take the nursing courses only, starting with NU101 and NU105 in April, I will be graduating in December 2011. I called the department of biology and told them i live in florida and that i needed to have the syllabus emailed to me so i can forward them to kaplan so they can accept my credits. She said okay, but gosh, in NY these schools take forever and they usually have an attitude problem lol. i am scared to call but a girl gotta do what a girl gotta do.

also, the advisor told me i didnt have to take the LPN course since i am not an LPN. it was an option for lpns and just put on our degree plans. so i didnt incorporate that into my graduation estimation.

if you find out an actual date, please let me know as well. i just did my own calculations as best as i could.

I'm currently enrolled in the program, and you cannot take more than one clinical at a time. However you can take a clinical plus a core class

So far my Sociology, Psychology, and Math classes have been accepted for transfer credit. I am still waiting on Composition and A&P. I spoke to the Bio dept. at one of my previous schools today and they sent me a course outline by email already. I spoke to someone in the nursing dept. today and he estimated that I will graduate in Aug of 2011 if all my courses are transfered. I was also previously told that the soonest the program could be completed is 16 months so I will have to confirm this with Kathleen Kudia in the nursing dept. because she knows alot about the program. Do you know if all the clinicals are only one day per week? I am really looking forward to next semester and have already started looked for study aids for the pharm. class.

August 2011, that sounds great!!! I will call tomorrow so I can have a better idea as well. I honestly dont know if the clinicals are one day per week. all i know is the pharm is 4 times out of the ten weeks next quarter, but i have no idea on the nursing clinicals. I am so excited as well for next quarter!!

hey, just so you know, i got an email today from kaplan saying the learning center wont accept the syllabi unless its from the year you took the course. i had to call again and try to get mine from 2007.

Vindy,

Did you ever get everthing transfered over?

After a little persistance I was able to transfer everything over. I will be taking NU 101 and NU 105 next semester.

Hope to see you there!:)

Hey, I also got both of the A and P courses transferred over! See you next term!!!

Good luck to everyone starting this program.

Hey guys I also started the program on Feb, I'm having difficulty transferring A and P as well. My advisor said to re-take it, since I took it in 2004. I guess I could use a refresher. I'm registered in Pharm next term and A and P...hope to see you there :coollook:
