Need help to find job in NYC

U.S.A. New York

Published

I am a RN with 2 years med-surg experience from TN, and i recently relocated to NY because of personal matter. I have B.S.N., BLS, and ACLS certificate. I have applied almost every hospital in the area for the position i qualify for. I only had one interview and i didn't get that job because they decided to hire someone with that specialty experience. I would appreciate any suggestion to help me get a job. I thought it would be easy to get job in NYC, but it does not seem like that. Is it really this hard even with experience?

No offense meant but would have been better if you had done some research about NYC RN employment before arriving here. In short the market for both experienced and new grads ranges from dismal to horrible depending upon who you speak to.

Over the past two years three major hospitals closed, and previous to that about another four or so closed in the preceeding three or so years. Nursing homes and LTC's are closing and or reducing beds as well. On top of all this there was the fiscal/credit/economic crisis that hit both healthcare facilities and individuals. All this going on whilst a score or more of local nursing programs keep churning grads out like clockwork.

Being as all this may judging from the posts here and other information some hiring is going on, you just have to keep at it.

Expand your search to Long Island, Westchester, upstate NY, and other areas outside Manhattan. Keep in contact with nurse recruiters so your CV and other information isn't just thrown into a pile lost with the others. Attend job fairs (yes, I know but at least you'll get to meet recruiters face to face), and above all network. It helps to have someone inside a facility that can not only give information as to openings but act as a reference as well.

Good luck,

Thank you. I actually applied to many hospital around queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and long island. Another thing is i am new to this area so i don't know someone inside a facility that can be my reference for that hospital. However, i have great references from my past job. It is also very hard to contact nurse recruiters directly. I am praying and crossing my fingers, hopefully i will find a job soon.

It is a *very* trying time for RNs both new and experienced to find work in NYC and the surrounding areas at the moment. Some hiring is going on but no where near the levels to absorb all those looking for work including the new grads that just keep coming.

Your plan thus far seems to be on target, just keep trying. JJudging by posts here, nurse recruiters can be a pain to pin down but keep at it as well.

Also try networking even impromptu. When out and about on a bus, train or in a shop and you see a "nurse" or someone in scrubs/uniform (ask if they are a nurse) and then chat them up about their facility and the hiring situation. Despite the reputation many New Yorkers are quite nice and very friendly. I've spoken with numerous RNs on buses or subways about this and that, and no one has told me to push off or get lost, well not so far anyway. *LOL*

Good luck!

I'm in the same boat as you. I have applied a few places and have almost the same cv as you. We should talk.
