When I last put together a resume cover letters weren't necessary. Now they're recommended. What goes in a cover letter? Can someone give me any examples? I can't find any examples anywhere.

Hi Tazzi,

Usually you want to keep your cover letter about one page long. Its purpose is to draw attention to your resume so with that in mind, you will want to add some of the highlights of your resume.

I start with my address and phone #, then drop down and add the date, then down again and put in the title and address of who it is to. I start the letter with "this is in response to your ad for job blah blah that I saw in (wherever), and express briefly my interest.

Then, I summarize my resume and then as an end paragraph, I thank whoever for considering my resume and where I may be reached.

Hope that helps!

Okay, how's this:

Dear (----)

I am interested in a position as a home health nurse with your agency. I found your ad at Yahoo Hotjobs and it caught my attention.

I have worked in emergency medicine for nineteen years and am interested in broadening my experience base. I was with your agency for several years as a CNA and for several months as an RN in the beginning of my career. I have good memories of being a part of the agency and would like to be a part of it once again.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Looks pretty splendiferous so far Tazzi

Thanks, Beary!!! Thanks for your help.

Specializes in Maternity, quality.

In a cover letter you want to expound on why YOUR qualifications are what they are looking for in a candidate. Don't just summarize your resume (they can read that themselves), but state what you've done in your career history that demonstrates how you fit their needs. Your resume is often a rather terse piece of prose and you state the basic job description. The cover letter allows you to go beyond that and give them more information. Like Beary said, keep it to a page, state in the first paragraph what you're writing about, use the last paragraph to thank them for their time and let them know how/when to contact you. Here's a link with different articles about and examples of cover letters:

Working in emergency medicine has taught me flexibility and critical assessment skills that I feel would be an asset in home health.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope that I can interview with you soon.

Surely you jest. With the greatest repository of information created to date, i.e., the WEB, I am surprised you could not find any information or examples. Or are you just giving us the razz-ma-TAZZ?

Why would I come on here and jest about this? The sites I checked out gave suggestions of what to put in a cover letter but I wanted examples. That okay with you??

Sometimes we look to our friends and peers for assistance. Maybe you didn't mean it but your response comes across very rude, at least that is how I interpret it.

Specializes in OR, transplants,GYN oncology.

Yes, Jussurfin did come across as rude. Or sarcastic. Not so nice.....Maybe that wasn't her intention.

Your cover letter also gives you the opportunity to express yourself a bit more fully than the listings on your resume. It allows you to demonstrate that you are articulate, so be sure that your grammar, spelling and punctuation are correct.

You may want to say something about the aspects of emergency nursing where you are especially skilled or have particular interests, mentioning that these are strengths you have to offer to the department.

Consider closing by saying that you look forward to an opportunity to meet and discuss how you might contribute to the mission of the organization or to the excellent patient care offered by this department. Something along those lines.

Good luck.

Linda

please help me make a cover letter.. anyone? pls..;-)

so far, this is what i have.. please check it..

Dear XXX,

I am writing to inquire for a possible employment as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in your facility. I graduated last April in XXX and just passed my NCLEX last August.

I believe I would make a positive addition to your nursing staff. Though I don't have experience working in a nursing field before, working as a hotel concierge for the past 2 years, I have learned to adapt quickly, make quick decisions, anticipate the needs of our guests and provide a good customer service. Aside from that I am a quick learner and a very hardworking person.

Thank you for taking time to review my resume. I am looking forward to meeting you soon to discuss possible employment. I will be avalable for an interview at your convenience and may be reach at XXX-XXXXXX. I look forward hearing from you.

Sincerely,

XXX

Please if anyone can suggest to make it better, please post it asap.. thanks;-)
