Need advice re: pre-travel nursing

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm a new nurse (less than 1.5 years) on a medical/telemetry/oncology unit, which I like. I am seriously interested in pursuing traveling around January 2018. I am wondering whether to leave my current unit soon so that I can spend about 6-7 months on another unit to get more experience before traveling.

I don't know what area I want to work while travel nursing. Medsurg and/or oncology are options, though I only have about one month of chemotherapy administration experience right now. I've entertained the ideas of ED or ICU as well, though, as I said, I would only stay at a new job for 6-7 months before traveling.

Do I pursue ED/ ICU for 6 months before traveling? Do I tackle another medsurg unit? Do I stay on my current unit and hope to get more oncology/chemotherapy experience? Advice much appreciated.

Be careful not to burn any bridges in the name of pursing your travel plan. At least in the ICU, I think you'd barely be off orientation when it's time to quit.

Seven months of training will not qualify you to work in that area as a traveler.

Start working with a couple of travel agency recruiters now. They will guide you to the experience you need , to work in the area you want.
