Need advice: pregnant new grad-when to apply for jobs

Published

Greetings everyone!

I am scheduled to graduate the first week of May. I an currently 7 months pregnant (baby due 7/2) and am willing to start work immediately ( I worked full time with prior pregnancies so this is not an issue). I would like to start applying for jobs but I am concerned about getting hired in my current pregnant state. Do you advise applying now or waiting until after the baby. I am a very competitive applicant and don't want to miss any prospective job opportunities. However, I do not need to waste time if I am most likely not going to get considered.

Thanks in advance for your input!:yeah:

Considering it's so difficult getting jobs, it may not be a bad idea to start applying now. You may not hear from recruiters right away. Best wishes with your baby and the job search! :)

thanks quiet patty!

I would start applying now, because many applicants wait a while before they even hear anything. I actually applied to a job when I was 37 weeks pregnant and got the job the next day. She "held" my job until 6 wks after I had my baby :)

I would apply now, you never know. But on a side note: I wouldn't mentally count on returning to work straight away. Even with experience from prior pregnancies. My sister had 3 girls and by the time #4 was due, she thought she had the whole baby thing down pat and could work...... not so much!

Specializes in LTC, Psych, M/S.

I would evaluate how competitive the job market is in your locale for new graduates. If the market is saturated don't waste your time.

You can start applying right away. Some recruiters would hold the job for you till you are ready. Also getting a reply may take a while and you still need to pass the NCLEX. All these put into consideration, i believe you will be ready for work by the time they are ready for you. Just dont wait till after the baby to do NCLEX

Specializes in L&D/Maternity nursing.

i started applying when i was about halfway through my pregnancy (just passed the boards). unfortunately every interview i was called in for, i did not get the job. i know it was due to my pregnancy bc i had no problem getting a job after my son was born.

i wish you better luck than i had. and congrats!

thanks..i definitely plan to take the nclex before the baby..thanks

thank you so much for your encouragement! I am very glad that you promptly found work after the birth!
