Need Advice On The Excelsior Program

Published

Hi, Does Anyone Know What Is The Shortest Amount Of Time That Other Students Have Completed Their Ec Rn Program. I Will Be Graduating From My Lvn Program In About 1 Week And Plan On Taking The Ec Program To Become An Rn Right Away. I Plan On Doing The Program In The Least Amount Of Time. Is It Possible For Me To Take The Boards For Rn Let's Say By January Of 2006 Or Before? Am I Being Realistic, Or Would It Take Longer? Any Advice Would Be Greatly Appreciated. Thank You

I am interested in the LPN to RN ADN program at Excelsior College. I have looked all over their website but I can't find a list of classes that I have to take. I found the nursing classes, ( I think) but I can't figure out if you need others. I have a BS degree and completed the pre-reqs for an RN program so I have A&P and Micro, english. etc. somebody please help!!!

You should be able to find and download the nursing catalog from the website. I've done so a time or two. They will have all the requirements outlined, and you should be able to roughly compare what you have with what you need -- there's a slight chance that something won't transfer but I found that all my old credits did, and some were pretty old. If you have a BS and your sciences you probably won't need anything other than the nursing exams and I think now they require a computer literacy type of course. That requirement came after I signed up so I don't really know about it, but if it applied to me I have some old courses (and an A+ in computer repair) so it should be pretty easy, probably pretty easy for anyone who can find and post on this website! Just a guess. Check the catalogue for the latest.

soooooo.....

Let me get this straight. If I get kicked out of my nursing program, after the second year, I could start at Excelsior and transfer my first year of classes ( or take the tests.... )

Not necessarily. I know you have to have completed more than 50% of the clinical part successfully. It would depend on what you were "kicked out" for.

I found their review of records to be exceptionally thorough, one might almost say intrusive. They have never wanted to be seen as an easy way out for people who can't make it the traditional way for anything other than time and convenience.

In other words, if you were lousy with patients or couldn't pass your exams, don't look to Excelsior to accept you--and don't expect to pass their written exams. Those were more difficult and comprehensive than "real" nursing school exams.

Chris is absolutely right. Excelsior is an option for those with clinical experience, but should not be seen as an easy way out.

I highly recommend their program to those who are prepared. For those who are considering it because it might be easier: this is not the program for you. I don't see it as better or worse than a traditional, on-campus program. Just different. It's a lot of work as is any nursing program, but well worth it.

It took me 13 months from my first of eleven exams to completing the CPNE.

It took me 6months to complete program it is expensive and all fees are going up July 1 not only do you need to know all your critical elements which every nurse does we use them every day you need to know how to do a care plan starting with dx to interventios to evaluation phase I just took exam passed every thing but care plans it was the worst three days of my life the stress was almost unbareable I did not pass on care plans because I did not complete evaluation phase to the examiners liking Racine is a big facility only good thing is they dont have a lot of peds so you might not get one my peds pt was 81 years old It is a good program and it is doable just was contaminatio potential and know your care plans and it does not take 5-7 monthss to get appt, for CPNEI had mine 2 months after application sent in

well i'm here to tell you it takes that long i've been ready since march and it is june and i am still waiting to get a date...

If this is how your care plan was written I can understand why you did not pass.

Good for you to have a positive attitude to go back and get the the clinical out of the way!!! Having completed the CPNE myself, I know what a difficult task this can and is. Some people may be the most prepared students and fail simply from nerves. LPN, I really think before you should make statements of this nature you must experience first hand the CPNE. I fortunately did pass with no repeats...but this was a difficult challenge to say the least. Seven tested in our group and three passed. It can be done. GNurse--I wish you the best and admire your spirit to return! You can do it. LPN--put a little empathy to play because you haven't experienced it yet yourself. You never know when you could wake up in the same situation you judged harshly the day before.

I am assuming English is not your first language, GNurse02. If that is the case you have my apologies. However, if English is your first language I would encourage you to please go to your local community college and sign up for an English class, as it is apparent you are lacking in spelling and grammar skills. Spelling and grammar skills are imperative to success as a nurse. This isn't a swipe at your worthiness or integrity, I apologize if it seems that way.

BTW, I *have* made all the phone calls I can make, that hasn't gotten me anywhere any faster.

Whether or not English is her first language, you owe her an apology. There are a whole lot more elements to language and dialect than just English/NotEnglish. As a nurse, it would probably be wise to be acutely aware of this.

Coming from a larger city and working in what is considered 'city' and living in hillbilly country, I can tell you that some of the language I hear on our floor makes my perfect English upbringing cringe. This includes nurses, managers, patients, doctors. Some of our best nurses are the worst spellers. I offered to re-write a letter of complaint for one of our nurses because her spelling and grammar were so horrific ... felt I could because I knew her and we were friends but I wouldn't make that offer to a stranger. And THIS nurse saved my mother's life by being incredibly on the ball.

All I'm saying is you need to take a closer look before you make these kinds of judgements, and in a forum like this you have no idea where someone comes from, how they were raised, and what is and isn't proper English in the community they live in. And some speak well but just can't write -- or can write but really can't type.

As for the phone calls, I gotta wonder .... all my educational updates have been posted online in a matter of less than a week until now. Someone told me I'd get the carjack sooner if I called my advisor, and I did, the day after my last exam! And it took a whole lot longer than usual to get that update. I don't think it's a deliberate slowdown or anything but it's really odd that out of all the tests I've taken the last one took two weeks longer to post than the rest, right after that posted I sent in my transcripts for my written English and once again we were back to having results posted in a few days. Looking out for the UPS guy ... it's gotta be soon!
