need advice on getting hired (RN with employment gap)

Published

Hi everyone!

I'm a Philippine RN with a total of 16 months of experience in the medical-surgical unit from September 2008-February 2010. I arrived in Seattle, WA January 2010 and spent the whole year processing my WA-RN license (included TOEFL, CGFNS, and NCLEX). I finally received my license October last year but didn't get to apply right away because I got pregnant and had to go back home in December for a church wedding. I came back February 2011 and has been applying since then with no luck. In short, I have been unemployed for about 14 months now (Feb 2010-April 2011), and counting! I'm due this June but I'm hoping to be able to get a job about a month after I deliver.

If the employment gap in my resume is what's causing the hospitals or nursing homes not to call me for an interview then I need help. Any advice on what you think I should do? Just keep trying? volunteer? refresher courses?

Thanks! :)

Employment gaps are a huge issue for some companies. I think it is important to explain as little as possible about the reason. Always tell the truth, for ie. tell them you started your family. In the United States they are not allowed to ask about your family, how many children you have, etc. I have had a gap because I was going to school. I tell them I go to college. Try and move quickly from the subject telling them why you would be a good candidant for the job. Most hospitals orientate and inservice according to governmental guidelines so you will get refreshed. If there is a shortage in your area, you should not have a problem. Remain positive and congratulations on your family. Good luck. Focus on your good work history and your past work skills.

by headhunter, do you mean agency?

to nurse.sandi: thanks..i already mentioned it in my cover letter though...i'll try to revise it and make it shorter... i guess i'll just have to keep trying huh?

Your cover letter is important to get you an interview. Do not put any negative issues in a cover letter. Change it and make sure it is positive. Good luck.
