Need advice first job speciality but really like primary care

Published

Hi I am recentely Board certified in FNP and joined the job market and it appears most clinics and urgent centers are looking for experienced FNPs and in this search I interviewed for a speciality clinic specifically thrombosis clinic . There is a good chance I may get this job but my heart is in primary care. I think I will take this thrombosis clinic job if offered to me as I want to get my NP career going. So how hard is it to go from a specialty to family practice. In other words after working several years in thrombosis clinic I wanted to go to urgent or family based clinic what would I have to do to upgrade or relearn skills. I know it is specific for each person but I would like to hear from someone that has done this route.

Thanks

Congrats! I think if there's no other way, secure the job in the thrombosis clinic and build np experience that way, and move up from there. Have you tried retail clinics?

Thanks I looked at CVS minute clinic and none close by but saw only 2 openings but kind of scared to work alone as a new grad but my question is after working speciality how does one go on to work in primary care. Thanks for the reply !!

Specializes in Emergency.

Most professions are this way, they value experienced people who are far more likely to be able to hit the ground running and will need less resources to produce at full speed immediately. This is a quandary that just about any and all new grad in any industry experiences, how do I get experience without the first job?

This is why I am such a strong proponent of networking early and often. Your network of contacts with other providers is likely to lead to far more leads and those leads are likely to be far more productive than just cold calling or answering adds on job sites. This will be the case not only for your first job, but for other job leads in the future. Yes, you will likely get many contacts from recruiters after you start to gain experience, but your contacts will be able to steer you in the direction of good opportunities and warn you away from potential land mine opportunities.

In any case it sounds like you have a lead for a first job, not ideal, but a first job. I would suggest you strongly consider it as it would allow you to get that first experience and possibly gain other experience on the side or build a network within the provider community during that same period of time so you will have a better chance of finding something more to your liking in the future.

I wondered the same thing, I'm guessing it's similar to these:

Thrombosis Center

Thrombosis - - - University of Utah Health Care - Salt Lake City, Utah

Thrombosis clinic manages anticogulation medications for those patients that need long term anticoagulation such as DVT, post MI post stent and mechanical heart valves etc.....so it is not a fast paced high intense job but you can really screw up if you over or under coagulate.

It is much more difficult to go from

a speciality back to primary than it is from primary to speciality, at least from the report of all my colleagues that have attempted it.

Many primary care positions involve a portion of thrombosis clinic-esque work as part of the clinic day but it is a very easy skill to learn. Plus it's a job that is going extinct....

So what would you recomend for someone in speciality to go back to primary care ie. take a review class?? retake certifcation exam?

Taking a review course is a great way to be reminded of the things you may have missed.
