This is a personal interest of mine and want to know from nurses; have any of your patients reported having a Near Death Experience, where they had to be revived and then shared stories of seeing loved ones or reporting that they have seen and heard the conversations of those physicians and nurses that have tried to revive them?
One of my interests has been to hear stories of things like this and wanted to know if anyone has ever heard of such. What reminded me of this is I head from a friend that had an ectopic pregnancy 10 years ago, and she still speaks fondly of this phenomenon. While speaking with her, it hit me that I can communicate with nurses and ask. This woman continues to speak to people about this to whomever will listen and I always listen with rapt attention. Thanks... :0)

I have never had a patient that has had a near death experience (that I'm aware of). Are you asking only about patients? My mother had a near death experience, I don't want to go into the long story if that is not what you are looking for, but if you are interested in hearing it just let me know.
I would be interested in hearing your mother's story too, if she or you are willing to share it (thanks...I am happy to hear about it ). I inquired about patients only because I figured that nurses may have been exposed to it.
Through my friend, I met several people that have had them, with interesting stories, such as being struck by lightening, ectopic pregnancies (as I mentioned), heart attacks and one from a man that fell off of his roof. Speaking to this person again last night brought that curiousity back, because it is a fascinating phenomenon.
Thanks!
I was thinking about posting this at hospice as well as cardiology nursing...thanks for the idea.
ok. so here is what happened to my mom. about 4 years ago her and my dad were out one afternoon going to antique shops down in the city (st. louis). she stepped off the curb and got hit by a car. she said she looked both ways (she's only 54) and there were no cars coming. he came around the corner that fast. my dad still regrets not holding her hand to cross the street like he usually does (my husband does this also). the driver had no license and no insurance and was speeding very fast. he hit her so hard that she flew up over the car. she was unconscious. she was rushed by ambulance to the nearest hospital. she suffered multiple broken ribs, one of her hips, her pelvis, one of her tibia's, and one of her ulna's. she was in bad shape and we (my dad and all six of us kids) thought she might die. she came out of surgery ok and stayed for rehab for a few weeks. came home in a wheelchair. soon progressed to a cane. now she's like new. but this is the thing. she told me that she doesn't remember being hit. but she didn't understand why she was looking down at my father in the street with her crying. she saw him call out to the owner of the antique shop to call 911. she remembers seeing her eyeglasses crumpled up and bloody lying on the street. she said didn't know what was happening, why she was "looking down" at herself and my father, and mostly she remembers how sad she felt for my father because he was so scared and crying. the next thing she remembers is waking up after surgery and that is when we told her she was hit by a car. kinda cool, huh? i hope this helps.
real cool!! how does she view her experience, now? does she believe that there is life after death, and weird question; does she have problems with electrical appliances? i ask because one of the people i met that had an nde told me he cannot wear watches because they just stop working on him within a few hours, and cell phones irritate him for some strange reason...he doesn't want one near him. your mother's experiences is like a paranormal love story...love brought her back to you and your dad. i met some people that told me when they looked at their bodies, it looked 'horrible' to them and wondered how they lived in something that sort of trapped them for so long. thanks for sharing this!!

She views it as a spiritual experience. She does not believe in life after death. She doesn't tell alot of people about the experience, though. No probs with electric. The only prob. she still has is the dizziness because the impact broke the little bones in her ears.
oops. I so did not mean to hit the laughing smiley. I meant to hit this one.

I always hear a new nuance with these stories. Your mother is the first one I have heard of that doesn't believe in life after death after her experience. I remember attending a conference one time where a real macho man with the stetson hat and cowboy boots spoke of his...mentioning that he saw his mother and a child of his that passed on, how angels spoke to him...not a dry eye was in the audience, and he ended it by saying "It was the most horrible experience I ever had!!!". Shocked everyone! But, we each interpet things differently. I can understand why she wouldn't share it with many, though, because some believe it is a hallucination. I am glad that your mother is still with us to share her spiritual encounter and to be with you, still.
She says she does not believe in life after death because of her religion. I guess the question is, what do you mean by life after death? Do you mean life on earth? That is a big no no. Do you mean life in heaven, yes, that is what she believes.

When my great-grandmother died, she said, "There's nothing to be afraid of..it's very beautiful, there."
Basically, I guess I was inquiring does the experiencer believe in life after death in the form that is meaningful to them. Some come out of it believing that they are in spirit form close to us, others believe in heaven, nirvina, and reincarnation. Some have seen their personal religious icons, may it be Jesus, Buddha, Mary, etc... and others have seen those religious icons or representatives that they would not expect to ever see. For example, I had one Christian share that she saw Zen-like images, which sort of confused her. It is a fascinating phenomenon to me. Thank you so much for sharing your mother's story.
