NCLEX testing in 1 state, license in another

Published

Hello!

I am a recent graduate of a nursing program in Minnesota but I want to move to California and practice in CA.

I know that I can take the NCLEX anywhere, but I guess my question is what's the process for getting the licensure in that other state. I applied to the MN BON and already paid the fee for that, and have registered with Pearson Vue. When I was registering with Pearson there was an option to select which regulatory body I wanted to be licensed in- which would be CA. So I know that i can get my test results sent there.. but should I have never registered with MN BON and registered with CA BON instead prior to registering with Pearson?

Thanks!

Is Minnesota a compact state with CA? If you already paid to MD you can apply by endorsement once you pass the NCLEX to CA

You must have your test results sent to the board of nursing that has your application and issued your authorization to test. Sending your results to California results in no license anywhere. California does not have your application and Minnesota will be waiting for exam results.

You are already most of the way there with Minnesota, finish up there and get that license. Then you apply to California with an active license and registration and hopefully they will be able to endorse that so you will have a license to practice in California too. If you meet CA's requirements for education and so on then your application should be approved. good luck!

If you know that you are not going to practice in MN, then yes, it would have been better to have registered with the CA BON. It would be cheaper, and faster, to register in CA.

Have you investigated registering with the CA BON and having updating your application with Pearson to your registration from MN to CA?

Neither MN nor CA are members of the Nursing License Compact. Even if they were, the OP would still have to apply for licensure in the new state, and meet that state's licensure requirements.

When relocating from one compact state to another is that you can work for either 30 or 90 days, depending upon state, on your previous license while your application for endorsement is being processed.

The problem is that your school needs to send proof of graduation to the BON that you have sent your application to. You chose to apply for a Minnesota license. Telling Pearson to send results to California is going to screw things up because they have no application on file. Apply for your Minn. license and then apply for a license by endorsement in California. From the numerous threads on the California BON, expect your California license to take a very long time to be processed.
