nclex review: to take or not to take

Published

Just wondering what you new and experienced nurses think about taking an NCLEX review after graduation before taking boards....

Specializes in Critical Care.

I took a course and passed the first time.

I can't go back and see if I would have passed otherwise. And, I wouldn't want to.

I really don't think it matters whether you pay for a review course or just buy a book (Saunders), the important thing is to do as many questions as you can!

Good luck

I took two reviews. The first was a three day course the school required. The book from it was good. The second was a freebie from a near by hospital. The session was good but the book almost caused me to have a heart attack.

The big thing was the repetition and practicing the questions. I also worked through three different NCLEX study books just to practice the questions.

Passed in 75 questions.

I took a Kaplan review course that the hospital I was working for paid for (otherwise I would not have been able to afford it) -- I took it for the security of touching all my bases. Was it worth it? Not sure -- I liked the 2000 practice questions I had, but also used Saunders and Mosby as well for practice question. I did feel the NCLEX questions were more like Kaplan than Saunders, but Saunders had better rationales in the book than Kaplan does. The test taking strategies Kaplan teaches you are in their book you can buy in the bookstore so if all you want are the strategies, sit in the bookstore and read the book. Hope it helps and good luck!

I just graduated in December. My nursing school provided the course two weeks after graduation and required that we attend. It was 8 hrs a day for 4 days. In my opinion, it was a waste. I studied from saunders and mosby. Passed at 75 questions.

Your course sounds like the one our school is "suggesting". I've decided to study on my own, since that's basically what I had to do to get through LPN school anyway.

I was offered a position at a hospital that is paying for the review for me. I probably wouldn't take it otherwise but since it's free, I definately won't pass it up.
