NCLEX Re-taking

Published

Hoping it'd be alright if I could share my ongoing experience here. Last year's July was the first time I took NCLEX and my computer stopped at 75 questions. Unfortunately, I didn't pass and was greatly discouraged at my results because it felt like I didn't study hard enough.

Before my test, I attended a review center (twice), read the Saunders 6th edition three/four times (pasted notes all over the wall of my room), answered q&a's from LaCharity. My friends thought I'd make it but I admit I'm not the brightest and Nursing isn't really my first choice so my grades aren't even in the highest or lowest, always in the passable range.

As of now, I decided that to take it again and scheduling this March. I already attended Kaplan last year's September so all I've been doing is self-studying. I just finished LaCharity again and this time I'm reading Saunders 5th edition and jotting down notes in a notebook. I'm thinking of doing some q&a from my copy of NCLEX rn-3500 and purchase an access to Uworld a few weeks before my exam (my free trial expired already and I really like the rationales compared to Saunders and Kaplan).

Here's to hoping a good and positive year for me and to those who'll be taking it.

Uworld and the PDA book will prepare you. Focus on uworld and do it twice if you have to. You got this!!

I passed on my 2nd attempt using UWORLD and Hurst (for content)

Thank you! I hope so too! May I ask, is Hurst good for review? I was just curious but I plan on focusing more on q&a since I think my problem has to do with analyzing the questions.

Hurst is great for review and understanding. I took the online version and re-watched the videos and completed the fill-in book. During those 2.5 months of studying I reviewed the fill-in book repeatedly. Hurst will help you remember key info used on STATA questions and it will make that info stick. The videos are not boring either. Hurst questions goes with the book which will prepare for content. The resource pages they give you as well is great.

Uworld is harder then NCLEX but I would use UWORLD after Hurst.

Nclex RN passpoint also has a two free week trial allowing you to do as many question during those two weeks. I did 50-300 questions and reached a level 8 (highest) on the second exam. It similar to Nclex as the questions are adaptive

I did HURST then NCLEX Passpoint two week trial and last UWORLD (one week free trial then extended it to one more week) = 3500 questions in 2.5 months.

You want to first brush up on content then tackle questions and remediate after.

I use more then one program to get a better feel of critical thinking instead of one program.

Hurst $300 + pass point (two week free trail) + UWORLD (one week free and extended a week for $20) = $320

Again, thank you so much for the tips! I only have Saunders for reviewing the content so I guess I'll have to stick with that. I made sure to bookmark the pass point so do I have to register in the site just to try out the free trial? And do you also know where I can access the free trial for Uworld as well?

Passpoint NCLEX-RN Exam Study Guide 2014-15, Practice Quizzes and Questions click on try it free, I called them as well since it was more than two days that I waited for access.

I recommend focusing on UWORLD a month before NCLEX exam since it's such a great tool.

Uworld: https://www.uworld.com/nclex/register.aspx?ID=STUDENT-971524-2015 I found online

There should be a new one for 2016 via online if you search, I also read that they put the code on their facebook. Call them for one week free using a new email.

Saunders is a good thing to start with but the questions are too easy, yet its a good tool for understanding.

Thanks so much for the links! Truly appreciate it! I've decided to try out the Hurst and focus on that first. Did you read other RN books besides Saunders/PDA and how long did it took you before your exam? Thanks again! :)

I read from the Mary ann hogan book comprehensive review book or saunder comprehensive review book for a certain disease that I wanted to know more about (four times on a different diseases) I tried the Saunders questions but stopped because it was too easy.

But then I just focused on HURST videos and the fill-in portion and resources that came with it repeatedly, in between that, I just did questions from hurst, passpoint and uworld. I did only five chapters from PDA as it was similar to UWORLD and Uworld was an better program to focus on.

I studied for 2.5 months 8-10 hrs a day due to the amount of questions and remediation/going over the questions.

During studying you have to manage you time wisely because some resources are not worth wasting your time using. Saunders questions was just too easy and Uworld prepares you better for Nclex but you have to know your content first (Hurst review) and passpoint is adaptive like nclex so that's why I choose to focus on those three programs because each worked for me in different ways.

Hurst prepares you to remember stuff for those dreadful STATA questions

Passpoint is adaptive like NCLEX EXAM where you have to reach a level 8

UWORLD teaches you how to think critically higher then NCLEX

That worked for me, and I didn't want to rely on one resource, it may work for others but knowing myself I was comfortable with trying all three and knowing when a certain resource was not worth using anymore due to my lack of time.

I had a hard time picking on which to study first, I stopped reading the review handouts I got since I feel like it was somewhat lacking. Kaplan helped me in understanding the strategy but it doesn't work all the time when answering some difficult questions.

I agree that Saunders being a bit too easy but real useful when it comes to content. I'll stick to Hurst and its videos then the other two sites. I'm still looking for the 2016 trial code for UWORLD though.
