I have a question on Saunders pediatric med calculation prob.

The problem child is prescribed Benadryl 25 mg orally q 6 hrs. The child is prescribed this med due to allergic reaction. The child weighs 25 kg. The safe pediatric dosage is 5 mg/kg/day. I picked the answer the dosage is too low. The dosage parameters are 125 mg/day and dasage frequency is 25 mg x 4 doses= 100 mg. (every 6 hrs).

My question what determines what is too low of a dosage here.

the body of the question stated that the safe dose is 5mg/kg/day so that means that for the child who weighs 25 kgs will have a safe dose of benadryl of 125mg for the whole day.

a dose which is below the safe dose is considered low dose and above it would be a high dose which you should question.

that is how i understand it.

Is there a range? Or is it strictly at 124 mg it's a low dose. I see in some of the problems they state " a safe range" but no details in this problem.

i think if it is specifically reflected on the question as to the safe dosage, you should focus on it. i have not come across therapeutic values of medications on pedia. but as far as my studies are concern for the past months, the medication therapeutic values i have encountered are the following: acetaminophine 10-20mcg/dl; chloramphenicol 10-20mcg/dl; dilantin 10-20mcg/dl; theophylline 10-20mcg/dl; digoxin 0.5-2.0ng/ml; magnesium sulfate 4.8-9.6mg/dl; lithium 0.8-1.5mEq/L.

just focus on the stem of the question and the choices...
