Change in NCLEX Questions??? BIG NEWS

Published

Hey,

Just wondering if anyone else has heard that the NCLEX is going to be changing the way the test questions are formatted ie, multiple answers to questions, using charts, graphs, fill in the blanks and of course the regular multiple choice. All this is to be effective for GN taking the test on or after April 2003. Share some feedback if you have any. What are your feelings or concerns about this. Also heard of short answer essay questions. This is all on there website. NCSBN.ORG Click on bottom left hand corner where it says NCLEX innovative items.

Thanks,

Melissa

It will make the test harder to do it that way, both for the taker and the test maker (how can they computerize the grade if it's short essay or fill in the blank?). But I think it would take a better measure of nursing knowledge.

You can score a computer-based test that has fill-in-the-blank questions. Trust me, I know from first-hand, working knowledge. With essay questions the results are sent in electronically and graded by a person.

I haven't heard that they were changing the format. Where did you hear it? I'd like to ask my instructors about it.

I'd think the board would want to give more than a few months notice of any major changes.

I did hear this today ! So will that make us better nurses to be able to pass a harder test? hmmm interesting.

D'Oh. Sorry I missed the web page you posted. I'll go check there.

Seems like it would be awfully hard to evaluate short answer essay questions, especially fairly. I would also think that would be bigger news, especially for changes taking place this year -- but what do I know? If I'm not in class i'm in a book or on this website!!

I would hope that someone from the school would let us know?

Oh, who am I kidding. I'm relying on the people who lost my scholarship information and a class grade for one semester.

Wow, I hadn't heard this yet, just had an NCLEX class on monday and the instructor didn't mention it. I'll have to look into it, thanks for the heads up!

I went to the website and it stated that these "innovative items" will be added to the NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN exams, but will not replace the current NCLEX pool items. I understood that to mean that they will be phasing these types of questions in, and that the current test will not be radically different. At least, I hope that's the case!

under faq for innovative nclex item format, question 4 states, "these item formats may be administered to candidates after april 2003"

the most current nclex exam candidate bulletin states on page 15 "all questions are multiple choice"

ncsbn has been "talking" about these questions for a few years now, i think the last time i read about it they were going to implement the changes in oct 2002. if this happens as fast as "all rn's being bsn prepared" the questions will still be all multiple choice in the year 2525 (if man is still alive......if woman can survive....)

but, i will take my test as soon as possible after graduation that i can, lol.
