NAU- Tucson Traditional BSN (Fall 2011 Hopefuls)

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Are there any other's planning to apply to NAU's traditional BSN for the Tucson campus for this fall? I just moved back to AZ after a year in Iowa and was planning on doing U of A's 2nd degree program but since it changed to an MSN and the estimated cost is 40K I have switched gears. I actually just discovered that NAU has the Tucson program and I am so glad I did. My back up plan after I decided U of A's program was a crock (IMHO) was Pima. Since I already have a BA in English and Pima's wait is so long that wasn't an ideal situation either.

So, looks like I have everything complete except the HESI A2 and maybe nutrition. I'm just finishing NTS154 at Pima but it doesn't look like that class will transfer for the nutrition requirement. I'm going to fight that though because Rio Salado has a 200 level nutrition that uses the exact same text and has the same course outline as the class I just took at Pima.

Well - good luck to everyone. Maybe I'll see you in a classroom in the fall.

Definitely. If I get in I'll be shouting from the rooftops - no Internet necessary:)

Well, the deadline is finally here. Best wishes to everyone that applied. It's going to be a long 4-6 weeks to wait. I'm so ready to just know already! I feel like my life has been in limbo for the last few months.

hi everyone, i've been attending pima cc and was going to go into their nursing program but decided to switch gears and try to get into nau here in tucson to get my bsn. i've been looking at the prereq's and think i only have a few left to do that i will try to take at pima since it's cheaper. did someone on here say that the nutrition class won't transfer? another thing is i have no experience in working in the human healthcare field (was a vet tech for 7 yrs) and it looks like that's actually a requirement for nau?? any info on how you guys got to the point of submitting your apps to the college would be great, thank you!

Hi Donna, there are two nutrition classes at Pima that NAU will take to meet the prerec requirement but only one comes across for credit . . . The one I took is the one Pima offers online FSN 154 I think. Anyway, it worked out for me but if you haven't taken it yet I'd suggest taking the other one or at least checking with NAU. Also if there's a chance you'll go to Pima the 154 won't meet Pima's nutrition requirement unless you're already accepted to their program and grandfathered in.

You do need to have at least 8 hours healthcare experience but I think you could get it by voulunteering or even shawdowing. I got certification as a CNA so my clinical for CNA counted eventhough I haven't actually worked as a CNA.

Anyway, good luck to you.

thanks nomadmamma! i was wondering if i could volunteer somewhere and also have that count as healthcare experience. i was thinking about going for my cna since i still have microbiology, nutrition, writing and developmental psy left to do. i didn't want to go too far off track tho :(. i'm able to get on pima's waiting list now but recently found out a lot of the new grad programs won't even consider you unless you have your bsn. kinda threw a wrench in my plans dang it :banghead:

do you mind if i asked where you got your cna cert? i was reading there are a few nursing homes that offer on the job training to get certified and possibly pay a small wage while you are in training.

thanks again!

Holyshniky... NAU decides who is accepted into the program based on a point system. So you do not have to have healthcare experience, but it sure looks a lot better and gives you those extra points. I am pretty sure you get separate points for volunteering and for working, so I don't think just volunteering will meet both of the requirements. I also suggest going to the NAU information session and bringing something to write down notes on, it'll help answer a lot of your uncertainties. Best of luck!

Donna,

I got my CNA cert in Iowa before we moved here this past fall. I can't actually work on my cert here in AZ without jumping through hoops but it counts for healthcare experience so I guess it was worth it.

Nautucson is correct about the point system so I suppose you don't have to have healthcare experience but it is something you're asked for on the application. With over 100 people rumored to have applied for just 20 seats - my advice is better safe than sorry. I did specifically ask if volunteering in healthcare would count as healthcare experience and was told that it did. I know others that volunteered at hospice or local hospitals to meet that requirement. Of course you should confirm that. They just want you to have been exposed to some aspect of healthcare. You need 8 hrs healthcare and 8 hours volunteering. My understanding is that one experience can count for both if your volunteering happens to be healthcare related but of course the more you have the better. I would suggest calling the program office in Tucson to find out when the next info session is and then you can get the requirements first hand.

I also wanted to mention that you can apply with classes in progress but again that goes back to the point system. You'll be competing for a seat with some people that have completed all the prerequisites.

Best wishes. I'm on here way too much if you have other questions (got to occupy my brain until I find out if I got in:).

Hi everyone,

I also applied for the Tucson Fall 2011 semester a few weeks ago. I am excited and nervous at the same time. I'm also on the PCC waiting list, but have a start date of 2013! I already have a BS in Public Health, but decided to take the nursing route. I would love to work in LAD but have been told it's difficult to get into. I guess I should just focus on getting into nursig school first. I look forward to hearing from everyone else who applied to the program. Maybe we'll see each other next semester.

Yay Jenbilla. I think that makes six of us. I CAN. NOT. WAIT. for April to get here already. I looked into Pima too. I finally decided to put all my eggs in one basket. I figured with NAU taking aps every semester even if I don't get in this semester I'm bound to get in before my number would come up at Pima. Plus, I have a BA already so it'll only take me one extra semester to do the BSN vs the ADN.

Hope we see each other in the fall:coollook:.

ok nau hopefuls, let's do an experiment. if you have an active account on louie click on the major/minor tab and see what it says. i'm curious if this means anything. it has always been blank when i have looked before but it isn't blank on mine anymore:rolleyes: it says "bsn degree seeking tucson north". it's in the upper right hand box when you first log into louie.

I do not see the major/minor tab what web page are you viewing?

some oe should just call ad see if they can tell them if they have been accepted.
