NAU Tucson spring 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi, I am applying to the NAU nursing program at the Tucson campus in September to start in spring 2017. I have a few questions for anyone who has taken the Kaplan entrance exam and the admission process. What did you use to study for the Kaplan? I went to the nursing info session and I was told the Kaplan study guide wasn't very helpful and to use other options for studying. Any additional information about the program or admission that can be provided would be a huge help!

Thank you!

Applying for the pima CEP also! I was told you cannot turn in the application or make an appointment without your kaplan scores. Joanne the Tucson advisor said that Kaplan scores are the very first thing they screen, if you don't make the Kaplan requirements/average they don't even look at your prerequisites or consider your application. The gpa is calculated off of prerequisites only but they don't factor in credit hours. For example a your normal college gpa will be weighted to where 4 credit classes count more than 3 credit classes etc. NAU nursing just gives you a 4 for each A and a 3 for B etc, then divides by the total number of classes. So for example an A in a 5 credit chem class counts the same as an A in a 3 credit math class. Also Science and math classes hold an additional .02 weight per class, so if you get an A in A&P for example it counts as a 4.02 instead of a 4. Does that make sense? Have you gone to an information session?

Yeah, it does, and I have. The only reason I was considering turning it in before was because in the application packet it says you can before you take the exam (I've already filled out my application). Have you already taken the HESI for Pima? I'm taking my exam tomorrow, got an 82% the first time hoping for a much better grade this time around.

Sorry it took me so long to respond! I took the HESI in December for the first time and got a 96%. But I think anything above an 80-85 is considered a good score for pima. How did you do the second time around? Do you know many other people that are applying for the pima CEP?

I am super nervous about the Kaplan coming up, from what I've heard it's much harder than the HESI. í ½í¸…

I got an 86 the second time around, the science portion messed up my score I got 90's in the reading and math sections. I completely overthought the anatomy portion and made stupid mistakes. I don't know anyone that is applying, I do have a friend that got accepted and is starting in the spring semester though. The kaplan is much harder than the HESI, while the HESI covers A&P I and II the HESI only covers II. I had a tough time with the grammar portion as well. I'm so anxious to find out if I got into the Pima program though, waiting is killing me!

Hey at least you did better the second time! I'm sure you'll get into pima! Dr. Gaw said they should have the final decisions two weeks after the Feb 1st deadline. Did you turn the pima app into the office or where you able to set up and appointment to turn it in???

Also when you say you "had a hard time with the grammar portion" does that mean you've taken the Kaplan before?? If so do you mind sharing how you did? (Totally understand if you want to keep that private though) :)

Kaylei,

do you know how much nuerology is on the Kaplan exam? Like is the basics of the PNS, ANS, sympathetic, parasympathetic okay? Or do I need to know everything about brain and nerve structure from AP 1??

I did submit my application in person.. I don't have my exact scores for the Kaplan, I can't find them but I know I got an overall score in the 70's my first time around ( I did not study prior). I would brush up on overall grammar, math was a lot of conversions, the anatomy section was all A&P 2, it was more specific rather than generalized like the hesi. I would search more forum topics in allnurses over the Kaplan I've found some that were very informative and offered more information than I can give. My anatomy professor recommend picking up an anatomy for dummies book she said that helped a lot of students. When are you taking the exam?

Thank you! I do have that book and hopefully I will be fine. I take my test this Wednesday! You take yours soon too correct? Good luck!! I think I'll start an NAU Fall 2017 forum after I take my exam so that we can connect with many other applicants as well. :)

I took mine on Friday and I got a 78 overall, I did worse on the science portion this time but better in the math. How did your test go? Do you know if you can access old kaplan exam results? I did better on the science when I took it in September but I cannot find my print out of the results anywhere and I need it to turn in with my application since it would be from the last application cycle. I've looked online but cant find anything addressing it.

Hey Kaylei,

I got an 85 overall. 100 in math, 86 reading, 80 science, and 67 writing. I remember Joanne saying that anything above 80 is a good score so hopefully since you're 78 is close that will help!! I thought the science was worded very strangely and kind of tricky so don't get down on yourself about that. I'm not sure how to access old scores..it's very odd that we weren't given a log in or anything that we could use in the future. Have you tried calling Pima's testing center and asking? If not I would call Joanne and ask and make an appointment to turn in your app if you haven't already?

I had an appointment today with her and turned in my application. Joanne said that my score was on the low side, apparently to be competitive you need to have an 80 or higher in all categories of the test not just the overall score. Thankfully Pima is my backup in case I don't get in to NAU. Have you turned in your application yet?

Yeah I turned it in last week after my kaplan. She said she was confident in my test score and overall application, and not to worry about my writing score. At least you met the minimum which was 75 overall and 65 minimum science. I talked to a couple people who took the Kaplan the same day as I did, and they didn't get above a 70. Each application cycle is different so you never know. Even though they get like 150 applicants not everyone is applying for Tucson. I hope we both get in!!
