NAU Accelerated BSN Program 2016

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hi all -

I didn't see a thread for this program for the upcoming summer 2016 start date, so I thought I would start one. Please let me know if there is already a thread on this and I will have this deleted.

Who else is applying? I know last year was very competitive, so I doubt this year will be any different. I just took the Kaplan Admissions Exam and have finished all my prerequisite coursework, so I'm hoping for the best. Good luck to everyone!

Did anyone else feel like the science portion of the Kaplan had multiple questions with arguably correct answers? I did. And I have since looked into them and feel its true. Anyways! Egaddy, congratulations on getting into ASU! I am in Phoenix, but thought that ASU was the hardest accelerated program to get into. I'm running into a huge problem with my cumulative GPA, just at a 3.0 as I have accumulated so many college credits over the years in differing fields. :/

Congratulations, Egaddy! And kflo55-- I was looking into the post-bacc at ASU too--last spring-- but there was no way I'd realistically get all my prereqs done by the September deadline. So instead, I applied to their traditional program. If you rank high enough amongst the other ASU applicants to get your first choice, they have an option that starts this May as well. Its not accelerated, but it is year-round so you'd still be done by August of next year. Not sure if you could realistically get an application in there by Feb 1 deadline, but IMO, its not a bad backup plan!

As for the Kap, I kept hearing that the writing section was annoying but I couldn't see how it would really be all that bad. Well...now I know! Lol.. hated it. The science was my worst-scoring section but I wasn't necessarily frustrated by the question/answer choices. I just struggled with brain & special senses questions. Not really all that surprising since those aren't my strong suits. I know its nerve-racking but don't be too hard on yourself! A 3.6 and high 80's on the kaplan are GOOD! No regrets-- if you want to be a nurse, you will make it happen one way or another!

Thank you so much for your advice there. I went to an ASU info session a couple of years ago, but it's so hard to receive updated information on their admissions process as they point most people towards attending the sessions! I am preparing to take the HESI in about a week or so for GCU and a few Texas schools due 2/1, I was hoping I could cram that in. I will try to apply to ASU, if I am able to fit the TEAS in in that time. Thank you for your encouragement.

And thank you for your encouragement! I am in my second year of applying, and have already been denied again to a couple of programs. I just am so, so eager to begin.

Have you also found that it seems harder to get into a traditional program? I feel most traditional programs look at your cumulative GPA as opposed to prerequisite GPA... and some schools that offer accelerated don't let you apply to traditional if you have a bachelor's degree in another field.

Also, totally feel you on the Kaplan writing portion! So, so annoying. I studied grammar like crazy prior to my taking it, but I noticed the more subjective "style" portions of grammar decisions, those scored in the "development" section of the score report were so hard to discern. I struggled most with that aspect of the writing portion.

No problem! Lol @ the Kaplan writing. Yeah, the "main idea" and stylistic questions really threw me because they were asking those questions about passages that were not well-written to begin with. As for the HESI, I'm not sure! I haven't taken it. For ASU I had to take the TEAS and you get your score immediately. Let me know if you want to give me your email and I can send you the email address of the advisor I've been in contact with at ASU. Talking to her might be your best bet in terms narrowing down all the requirements for applying so you can discern if its really doable in this time frame. It is nice that the post-bacc programs tend to be more concerned with your pre-req GPA than cumulative. I definitely didn't work nearly as hard to get my first bachelor's since I was kind of clueless as to what career I really wanted! So its nice not to have that count against you. But I feel like ASU's traditional program requirements are fair. They do have a baseline cumulative GPA in order to apply... I want to say it IS 3.0. But as far as what you actually apply with, you get to select your top 13 out of 17 pre-reqs and they rank you based on that GPA and your TEAS score. Oh-- for your select 13 prereqs, you do have to include your Eng101 and 3 of the 4 lab sciences. But other than that, its up to you.

Anyway-- getting kind of off-topic. I know this board is supposed to be about NAU ;) Good luck on the HESI and with everything else you're working toward these next few weeks.. and let me know if you want to chat more via email!

Good call! Sorry to distract the mission here! Good luck everyone! I will let you guys know what I hear back

Hey Altius, thanks for starting this thread. I also applied for the Summer 2016 program, and am awaiting anxiously for the good or bad news. I just took the Kaplan about a week before the deadline, and did exactly what I hoped for, but after reviewing past threads, it looks like my score of 86 will just barely be competitive enough. I did so well on the Reading and Math sections (missing 2 questions total between the two), but then struggled with the Writing portion. The A&P was a bit of a crap shoot I felt, since there are thousands of potential questions, so I feel fortunate to get a so-so score. I contacted an advisor last year, and was informed that typical student who are accepted have a 3.6 GPA and have a Kaplan above the mid 80's. I'm literally right at those thresholds, but perhaps it will not be good enough, based on some past threads I have read. Anyway, good luck to everyone!

Has anybody heard anything?

Not yet, it's seemed like an eternity. haha.

It's killing me.

I had to email the advising office about something unrelated to admissions, but I decided to also ask them how many applicants there were in this cycle. They responded, but not to that question. Haha... anyone else happen to know? Good luck to all of you!

They told me before that every year they have over a hundred applicants. But it seems like it's classified.

One of the advisors told me 4 to 6 weeks from the deadline. I bet some of the applicants will be notified by next week. Those on the cusp or potentially on the wait list will probably be waiting 2 more weeks or so. Just my guess.
