NAU Accelerated BSN Program 2016
Hey guys, a student from two years ago suggested looking in Kachina Village and Mountainairre areas for cheaper housing. They are about a 10-15 minute drive on the freeway, just south of campus. From what I've seen, it doesn't look like they have much in the way of apartment complexes. But there are a lot of little homes for rent. Mostly mobile/manufactured. I've only just driven through the neighborhoods. They are really pretty...right at the edge of the woods/mountains. I think they are "areas" of Flagstaff more so than they are actual towns. But I know at least Kachina Village's cost of living is cheaper than most of Flag because it has its own water system, sewer system, etc. I am debating housing too. Flag is about 3 hours from where my husband and I live, so I'm gonna have to live away from him for the year. A studio makes the most sense since he'll be coming on the weekends as often as he can. But the price I'd have to pay to live alone is killing me! I'd be open to sharing too with the right place/person/people. I think I might drive down this week and check some stuff out, so I'll keep you posted..

THIS WEEK?! Ok, I wasn't expecting to hear anything til the very end of Feb or maybe even March... so I was doing a good job of putting the anxiety aside for a couple weeks. Now I'm freaking out!!!! Haha. I definitely hope we hear from them that soon!

I had to email the advising office about something unrelated to admissions, but I decided to also ask them how many applicants there were in this cycle. They responded, but not to that question. Haha... anyone else happen to know? Good luck to all of you!

Oh-- and on those topics that you feel like you need additional understanding... I would actually suggest referring back to your notes from class if the topic is something you've studied before (before going to the internet). When you're in class, you tend to memorize/organize thoughts in a particular way-- or your teacher may have had a unique way of teaching. So I think reading those notes will be more likely to stir up memories of how a concept works than reading a new explanation on the internet would-- even if its re: the same topic!

I studied almost exclusively from the ATI study manual and did both the practice tests in the back of the book, as well as the two online versions. I would definitely recommend those-- especially the online ones because the way they score you is the exact same layout/breakdown as on the actual exam. I've seen a lot of people post on here that they did significantly better on the actual exam than they did on the practice tests, and I found the same to be true! So I think its great that the practice exams basically over-prepare you. In the practice tests, I had a tendency to make some dumb mistakes like anticipating what the question was going to ask rather than carefully reading what it was actually asking. Luckily, I don't think I did that on the actual exam-- but I might have if I hadn't realized that I was doing it on the practice tests..lol. Its definitely a tough exam but very doable. The study manual really touches on every topic that will show up on the test so if there are sections that you keep finding to be difficult, look into them further online until you feel confident in your understanding. Most of all, try not to let your nerves get the best of you. Study hard, but definitely just vibe out to some good music on your way to take the test, trust your preparation, relax, and you will do fine! Rooting for you... good luck!

No problem! Lol @ the Kaplan writing. Yeah, the "main idea" and stylistic questions really threw me because they were asking those questions about passages that were not well-written to begin with. As for the HESI, I'm not sure! I haven't taken it. For ASU I had to take the TEAS and you get your score immediately. Let me know if you want to give me your email and I can send you the email address of the advisor I've been in contact with at ASU. Talking to her might be your best bet in terms narrowing down all the requirements for applying so you can discern if its really doable in this time frame. It is nice that the post-bacc programs tend to be more concerned with your pre-req GPA than cumulative. I definitely didn't work nearly as hard to get my first bachelor's since I was kind of clueless as to what career I really wanted! So its nice not to have that count against you. But I feel like ASU's traditional program requirements are fair. They do have a baseline cumulative GPA in order to apply... I want to say it IS 3.0. But as far as what you actually apply with, you get to select your top 13 out of 17 pre-reqs and they rank you based on that GPA and your TEAS score. Oh-- for your select 13 prereqs, you do have to include your Eng101 and 3 of the 4 lab sciences. But other than that, its up to you. Anyway-- getting kind of off-topic. I know this board is supposed to be about NAU Good luck on the HESI and with everything else you're working toward these next few weeks.. and let me know if you want to chat more via email!

I just took the TEAS last week! Application is finished, just waiting on admissions to process a transcript I had sent to them 80,000 weeks ago lol. Have you taken the TEAS yet? If not, let me know if I can answer any questions! Good luck!

ASU 2016 Applicants - Which Cohort?
slsimps4 Hey! Just my two-cents... don't worry too much about your practice test score on the TEAS. Definitely keep practicing the areas that are giving you the most trouble, cuz every topic in the ATI manual will be on the TEAS to some extent. But I scored significantly better on the exam than I did on any of the practice tests, and I've read MANY other people chime in with the same experience. Several of them scored up to 12% higher on the actual exam. Congrats on killing it with your GPA and good luck on the TEAS! You'll do great :)

Congratulations, Egaddy! And kflo55-- I was looking into the post-bacc at ASU too--last spring-- but there was no way I'd realistically get all my prereqs done by the September deadline. So instead, I applied to their traditional program. If you rank high enough amongst the other ASU applicants to get your first choice, they have an option that starts this May as well. Its not accelerated, but it is year-round so you'd still be done by August of next year. Not sure if you could realistically get an application in there by Feb 1 deadline, but IMO, its not a bad backup plan! As for the Kap, I kept hearing that the writing section was annoying but I couldn't see how it would really be all that bad. Well...now I know! Lol.. hated it. The science was my worst-scoring section but I wasn't necessarily frustrated by the question/answer choices. I just struggled with brain & special senses questions. Not really all that surprising since those aren't my strong suits. I know its nerve-racking but don't be too hard on yourself! A 3.6 and high 80's on the kaplan are GOOD! No regrets-- if you want to be a nurse, you will make it happen one way or another!

Hey kflo55! Have you tried asking any of the advisors? They might not be able to give an average for our exact cycle but I think they can give you an idea as to what scores have generally been competitive in past cycles. A former student told me that most of her cohort applied with GPA 3.8ish or above and high 80s-90s on the kaplan. Bu with only 30 spots in the program, I'm pretty sure this will be a painfully long 6-8 weeks no matter what they tell us! Good luck to you too... wishing the best for everyone!
