Natividad Hospital in Ventura, CA?

Published

I'm considering a travel assignment at Natividad Hospital in Salinas, CA (not far from Monterey) next year in labor and delivery. I want to find an apt. in Monterey and get the housing allowance rather than live in Ventura as I want to be by the Pacific Ocean. Can anyone give me any information or feedback about it? I don't know a thing about this hospital. Thanks!

Ventura is 6 hours from Monterey. Ventura, CA is located 45 minutes above Los angeles. Monterey is closer to San Francisco. The cost of living in Monterey is pretty high. Look at a map and check it out.

My apologies -- I made a mistake and looked at my notes wrong. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Natividad Hospital is in Salinas, CA, not Ventura. (I was also asked to take an assignment in Ventura at Community Memorial Hospital of San Benaventura, and don't know about that one, either).

The cost of living in Salinas is alot more affordable than Monterey. Salinas is a farming community not alot going on there. Monterey is beautiful. Community hospital in Ventura is one of the hospitals that I will go to for clinical in the fourth semester. I like the Ventura/Camarillo area. You are 40 minutes from Santa Barbara and 45 minutes to Los angeles.

I lived in Salinas a decade ago and until recently had a home there. Used to occasionally receive medical care at Natividad, the county hospital. Like most county hospitals, Natividad is a teaching hospital, as I recall, they sponsored Stanford, UCSF med students. Housing is very, very difficult to obtain, both in Monterey (a good 30-45 minute drive) and in Salinas. In

Salinas, depending on when you will be relocating, you will find yourself competing with transient field workers that fill up the rental housing. Be prepared to pay top dollar. You want to avoid the east side of Salinas, very ghetto and very gang related. Not a very family friendly city, particularly if you have teenagers. Better to travel alone and rent a room in a nice home on the west side or south side of town. Sorry I can not be of any more help. If I still had my home I could rent it to you! Good luck!

So there are quite a few Spanish speaking patients in Salinas? I need to take intensive Spanish this year. Maybe I should do this prior to the assignment -- I could keep using the Spanish!

You can't go wrong with learning and practicing Spanish! Whenever I had my home up for lease I would get written notes and telephonic voicemail in Spanish! Furthermore, you will find it useful on the job.
