Hi all!
My name is Claire and I am going to be applying for my last chance to get into the NU ABSN program in San Diego. I've attempted two times previously and have been denied. First time I believe I missed the cut off by a point or two so I improved my TEAS and essay then applied again and was denied by 3/4 of a point which was pretty devastating but I wasn't going to give up. I went and retook Micro because that was my only C and got an A so now I'm going in with an 89% TEAS, 3.75/5 on the essay and I think a 3.75. I missed the this more recent cohort 56 cutoff but I plan to apply to the next one in July and hopefully raise my TEAS and essay. I'm just so nervous because this is my last chance! I've basically disqualified myself from other institutions because I took the TEAS too many times and some of my prereq's are expired according to other colleges. This is literally my dream and I won't give up! Any one else applying and can share the pain lol :)
That's great! I'm taking mine in 1 1/2 week, I've been studying but I still don't feel prepared enough. What study materials did you use?
I use pocket prep, the TEAS app, and now I'm going through Mometrix. It's such a weird exam because I always think I did better than I do. Take the online practice tests if you can so you can get a feel for how the questions are. Also, read the entire question before you answer! I make sure if I don't know an answer I skip it until the end of the section then take the rest of the time going back to it. You'll do great. Just breathe and relax. A little prayer always help also :)
Abby - Sounds like you'll have a solid chance with your GPA and TEAS as it is as long as you don't bomb the essay.
My prompt both times what something along the lines of....."what qualities, skill or attributes will help you in your nursing career and as a nursing student"
I've scoured through other all nurses posts and theres mention of several others, I think 5-6 total in rotation? Another one, "describe nursing as an art or science", "...event or experience that has shaped you into the person you are..." Honestly these are just off of my memory so I'm not sure of the accuracy of them. I'll be going back through to find those prompts someone else posted and will post it here if I can remember ha! :)
Tips? Honestly not really for the essay....everyone has their own thing. Some people say to write up a skeleton first, some people say just start typing...others brainstorm prior to writing anything. It a VERY short period of time for knowing almost nothing going into it. Some people don't finish. I barely did both times and I wasn't even close to 100% confident in my responses. The tip I heard the most was write from the heart....
Essay Topics:
1. What characteristics and/or skills do you possess that will help you to contribute to the field of nursing?
2. What are your strengths & weaknesses? How will these attributes make you a good nurse?
3. Compare and contrast nursing as a science and as an art.
4. How will your nursing studies or life experiences contribute to the nursing profession?
5. What skills or attributes set you apart & how will these help you while in nursing school or in your nursing career?
6. Describe a time you had to use interpersonal communication to work through a difficult work situation.
7. Name a personal experience in your life that shaped you into the person you are today.
8. Why do you want to become a nurse? What motivates you?
9. How do you feel about not being able to have a social life once accepted into the nursing program.
10. The nursing program is very rigorous. What would you do to ensure your success?
