Has anyone had any luck with applying at National University for their nursing program? I applied back in Oct 06 and have been waiting to hear from them. They are supposed to notify in 3 months. I have called and called and written email upon emails with no response really. :banghead: Please, if anyone has applied and received some sort of letter, I would greatly appreciate your reply.

Thanks gnomik! I was also curious about payments. When do they require you to do a payment on a course? Before starting, during or after? Also, are there any lump sums we have to put down? Do you carry a PDA? How much was that? Do you use a laptop for classes or do you feel that they are not needed? One more: How much are scrubs? How many do you get for that price? They don't really require immediate payments but they may assess $25 late fees. Some people wait till they owe for like 2 classes and they pay it at once - they won't drop you for non-payment. Not sure if you will be using Fin Aid or paying your own way... And NO- no lump sum down payments are required.

They used to give students PDAs but they no longer do that because too many students complained of their poor quality. Many of us bought and constantly carry an ipod touch, to which we have downloaded our Nursing Central software. It is very convenient to have on hand at clinicals because you can instantly look up drugs, labs, diseases, etc. You will be given access to Nursing Central at your orientation. The ipod touch was a little more than $300 but worth every penny. I do have a laptop and they are useful, not in every class however. But you will need a laptop to take your tests on because all quizes/exams are computerized.

The cost of 2 pairs of scrubs + 1 jacket/cardigan will be included in your orientation fee. If you want to buy extra ones, it will cost extra (they are pretty pricey). But we all do fine with just 2 pairs. They will take your measurements at the orientation and give you a limited choice of style. You should get more detail about all this in your orientation packet. Also, they will take a picture of you for your ID at the orientation, so be sure to come looking pretty. :D

Great! When do they apply the $25 late fee? I do plan on paying for the courses befoe they start as I go along with fin aid/own way. I was thinking of getting the ipod touch. Which one do you recommend? I know there is one for $199 and it is 8G. Although I can also get one for $299 and it is 32G. Next is 64G for $399. I am leaning towards the 32G. I will also look into laptops too! It is good to know that the scrubs are included in the orientation price!! Thank you so much! I will make sure to put a little make-up on for the picture too! :D

I got my ipod for like $320 or something but I think it was 18G, it was the "medium-priced" one, so I'd go for the $299 probably too. I don't know when exactly they apply the late fees but as soon as your financial aid kicks in, they usually reverse them. I would talk to the financial aid rep for the specific deadlines regarding late fees. I don't worry too much about them - I borrow so much money to attend this school that the $25 fees are nothing! :uhoh21:

I just wanted to add that the best scrub top choices are the plain/standard or the zip up one. DON'T go for the top that has buttons in the back and the little tie. They perpetually come undone. I also agree that 2 pair are plenty.

Not really. You will have plenty of time to get that done when you start school. And yes, 32G should be plenty.

I personally ordered a scrub top with buttons in the back and then the "zip up" one. I'm pretty small and the extra small size of the zip top still looks big on me, so I hardly wear it. The button one is ok but somewhat hard to put on. If I had to do it over again, I would just go with ordering 2 "unisex" tops that look like just regular scrub top, plus they seem more comfy. So, that's what I would recommend.

As far as the laptops go, although they are helpful in class, many people do just fine without them. You will need one to take your exams on but you can always borrow it from the school for the duration of the exam. It's super easy to do (you just sign in and give them your DL in exchange for the laptop, and get it all back when you return everything on that day). I did it many times when I would forget my own laptop on the day of the exam. So, for those of you that can't afford or don't want to invest in a laptop, don't stress cause you'll do fine without it. ;)

Hi Everyone, I've been following this thread for a while, thanks for sharing your journey into nursing school with us!

I just got back from the most recent nursing orientation (11/18), and I got some information that other prospective applicants at National may find useful. I honestly thought the orientation would be a waste of time, but the young woman who coordinated it was really candid and organized. The admissions rubric consists of four parts and this is how it's broken down:

1. 20% How many times you had to take your prerequisites for a passing grade, "C."

2. 30% Your GPA in your Math/Science classes. One interesting thing to note is that the other prereqs are NOT included in this. You don't need to worry about a low grade in your speech, psyc, ILR, or other classes.

3. 30% TEAS score

4. 20% written essay

Hi StdntMurse! Thanks for the useful information!! I know it will be very helpful to those applying!! I wish I knew this when I was still applying! My adviser thought it was 20% TEAS and 30% Essay but if that were the case I probably would not have gotten in!! :chuckle What else did they tell you? Like a break down of tuition, etc?

I am in cohort 21, and very excided to start in January. My question is on textbooks that worth a lot at the time of purchase, and have little or no value after the class. Would it benefit of keeping them for a future reference? Is it necessary to buy the newest edition as required? There are places that are renting textbooks; would this way be a good option for NU program? Thanks again to all for sharing information.

Lets run the scenario and let you decide. You buy a brand new edition for $150, at the end of 2 months if you can get about $75-90, if you sell it back. If you wait until the end of your program you will likely get about $25 or less for it. Benefit: the book follows along with what the teacher puts into the powerpoints (for example chart 2-1 on pg 354)

Now, if you buy a book one edition back, you can get it for about $5 - $20 even practically new copies in pristine condition. I have found the information does not change noticeably, when compared with the newer edition, but it might be on a different page. (the same 2-1 chart would be there, but it might be chart 2-2 on pg 356).

I have never rented books because I can buy the edition back less than it costs to rent. As far as keeping the books for reference goes, it's kind of a personal decision, often based on how much you think you will need to use it in the future. I feel no qualms about holding onto a $5 book regardless, but I would have to sell one back, even if I could get only $40 for it.
