Nassau Community College

Hi, all,

I applied to Nassau Community College today for the Spring 2010 semester. I understand that the Spring class is much smaller than the Fall semester. Would anyone mind sharing -- I applied with a 3.75 and all pre-reqs done. Anyone out there get in to the January class in the past with a comparable GPA? I understand that it's all according to the pool of GPA's they receive - 4.0's first, but I'm looking for a glimmer of hope.

Thanks!

Hi Suzi,

Thanks for asking. I'm happy to announce that Dibbs and I both got it to NCC for January. We ended up posting the good news in another thread. I'm very excited and nervous at the same time. As hard as it is to get in, I hear it's hard to stay in too.

How about you?? Did you get in ?

Karen

Hi Karen!

I'm sooo happy for both of you! CONGRATULATIONS!!

I didn't get in ... my gpa was only 3.5. I was told by the head of nursing not to retake my psy class to boost my GPA, because they would deduct points... I have a "C" in general psychology she said because I took it 20 years ago, they wouldn't make a big deal out of it... told me that the As I received in AP I and AP II were more important, but now I wonder if I should retake it. Hmm?? What do you think? From what I read, it seems like most of your classmates in AP2 all have 3.90... so my 3.5 won't cut it.

You had a FANTASTIC GPA! Don't worry about "staying" in the program... you will! Just think you already made a friend and found a study partner in Dibbs.

I'll apply for Fall, and see what happens.. MY BEST TO BOTH OF YOU! Keep in touch!

Suzanne

Just curious, are both of you Nassau County Residents?

Hi Suzi,

Sorry you didn't get in. As for your question, if the head of nursing advised you not to retake Psy then I assume she know more about their admission process than I do. Do you have more non- nursing requirements to take.?like Med Micro, Dev Psych, electives, etc. That can boost your GPA and overall credits completed.

I am a Nassau resident and current NCC student. Another friend of mine got in with a 3.8 but it's really tough. Are you considering any other schools? SUNY Farmingdale considers admission based 50% on GPA and 50% on the pre-nursing exam, don't remember what it's called. It's on English, Math and Science. So if you get the study guide and do well on that you'll have a good shot with a lower GPA. I was going to apply there for Fall '10 if I didn't get into NCC this time. Deadline to apply to Farmingdale is Jan 15th.

Hi

Thanks for the info... I have to take Med Mic and that's it... Even if I get an A it won't boost my GPA that much... however if I retake my "C" gen psychology and get an A my 3.5 jumps to a 3.7 ... that looks MUCH better :) ... one info session says don't retake it... but the same person, who intially told me not to retake courses, said the opposite at the 2nd info session. ???? I'm getting too old for this! decisions... decisions... We'll see what the Fall brings.

Thanks again for "chatting" with me and for the Farmingdale info.

I, too, was told NOT to retake classes for a better grade.....and now I am wondering why not?! I don't get it. I have a 4.0 at Nassau...and a bachelor's degree (Magna Cum Laude - 3.75) from LIU in English/Minor Economics. I got a C in statistics over 20 years ago...and I can't help to think that this is the reason why I didn't make the cut. My nursing pre-req GPA is just above a 3.5 because of this grade. I'm thinking of taking statistics over the winter session just to eliminate that C and bring up my GPA, but I'm not sure that is the best strategy considering what I've been told. I was advised to just "reapply in March"....

Any thoughts from those who've been accepted? Did you repeat any classes? Was this your first time applying?

Whatever insight you may have to offer would be greatly appreciated...

Suzanne, what did you decide about re-taking classes?

Hi

I'll apply in March and if I don't get in I probably will retake the class online over the Summer. I would like to talk to someone in "Nursing" in interim to see what they suggest.

I'm frustrated that I didn't retake the class sooner...I doubt I would be in this position if I had. Like you, I tried to schedule an appointment with someone in the department for advisement and was simply told to "reapply". When I persisted and asked about retaking classes, I was told not to....which I still don't understand. I will also be applying in March and if I don't get in, I will be re-taking whatever is necessary over the summer. I'm not getting any younger, though...this ain't fun!

You're right. It IS frustrating! Acceptance at Nassau is such a "mystery"... to retake or not to retake... that is the question. It can't hurt, right? How many points can they deduct for re-taking a class? I wonder?? Good luck to us both! Dont' give up!

You too. We'll see what happens in March!

Hi everyone...I currently just applied to Farmingdale and Nassau's Fall 2010 program. I currently attend Farmingdale where I am doing my pre-reqs. I have a 4.0 average and so far I have taken English 1&2, Psychology, Childhood Development, Statistics, and A&P1...I am currently taking A&P2 and would like to maybe take other classes this summer if I can.

I took the NLN test for Farmingdale and unfortunately got an 82 which is pretty bad so I am pretty much scratching Farmingdale off my list because I heard they start admitting students by the highest test grade and it should be atleast a 90 or above so I really hope Nassau takes me in the fall. I already sent in my application so now its the waiting game. I called the school today and I was told I should receive an answer in the mail probably sometime the end up April....UGH the wait is going to kill me.

Even though I have a high GPA I don't know why I dont feel confident. I still have not finished all the pre-reqs and I was also told they take off points if you don't live in Nassau County (I live in Queens) so I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Just wanted to wish everyone good luck as well....I know this is a painful waiting process!

Hi Kuklara,

That's a great GPA---you should be very proud. You said that you already applied to Nassau....but I am pretty sure that they don't begin accepting applications until March. You might want to check on that. Also FYI - Child Dev is no longer a part of the program at Nassau. They've replaced that requirement with Lifespan Dev. Like you, I've taken Child Dev already... but I am taking Lifespan now. A bit frustrating.

Since you're a Queens resident, did you apply to Queensborough too?
