Nassau Community College : Anyone Applying for Spring 2011

U.S.A. New York

Looking for anyone who is applying to NCC for Spring / January start ( or anyone else on the road to applying) who wants others in the same situation to go through the process with.

sunsetswest56,

I wore business casual but once you've gotten an acceptance letter and you show up for your interview, you're in! When I went in for my interview they made us write an essay - I think it was to find out if you can read & write English and your thought process. It's not being graded. You will get a take home math test that shows the professors how advance the class is with math. It helps to practice some basic math to have a head start in class - addition, subtraction, mutliplication, division and algebra. They'll give you your schedule, clinical assignment, list of books (costs $$), immunization & physical form - bring to health office and get blue slip, uniform ordering and passport photo. I might be forgetting some things but they'll tell you the rest during the interview. Congratulations and good luck! :yeah:

evap2010, did they give u a vocab test and another test at the interview?

No vocab test, just an essay. I think the class accepted a semester before me got a vocab test asking to define what temperature is or something like that. It'll probably be different depending on who's in charge. I wouldn't sweat it. Then there's a take home math test that you bring back the first day of class. If you can chew gum and breathe at the same time, you'll be fine.

Ohh, thanks. I thought they were going to put me through some tests. How long did the whole interview/advisement thing take you?

It took about an hour and a half. After the instructors give you the information and you finish your essay or whatever they have you write, they take you individually into another room to ask you some simple questions to make sure you speak English, ask if you have questions or problems with the schedule or course and give you a slip of paper to register for the course which you need to take to the registrar's office in person. If you want to get out of there quicker, finish the written stuff quicker and the instructors will take you in order of who finished first. :)

Hi , it seems like everyone accepted in the nassau program had a gpa of 4.0

, i just concluded my first sem and i think i might have a B in both statistics and Eng 101, would this b challenging for me to get in to the nursing program if i should get A in both my anp and psych . for the spring sem . Some please respond to me . And also with me being a guy im i automatically disqualified ?

First of all they dont discriminate so being a male does not put you at a disadvantage. They do accept people w/o 4.0's, I know b/c I am one of those people. If you continue to get A's you should be fine but it gets more competitive each year. If things dont work out there are a number of 4 year schools in the area.....in the long run attending a 4 yr school is probably your best option b/c hospitals especially those with magnet status are hiring AD nurses less and less.

I found out today that i had an A in Eng 101 and an A in statistics ... hopefully i will do well in psych and anp1. but if u dont mind what was your G.P.A?

I think it was about a 3.7 at that time

But i suppose you took more than the basic 4 pre-reqs ...Eng. Stat.Anp.Psych.

There is a "formula" that NCC uses to see who gets in. You get points for being a Nassau resident, points for having at least 12 (I think) credits previously taken at NCC, and points for your GPA, prereqs, etc...go to the admissions office (if you can) or call and ask for the Nursing Advisor and she can tell you exactly what the breakdown is. It takes all the guess work out of the process and you'll know what you need to get in next time!! I do agree with a comment on here about looking at 4 year programs - unfortunately, the market is flooded and most hospitals want a BSN so you may want to just go for it! GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks RisGirl.
