Nassau Community College : Anyone Applying for Spring 2011

U.S.A. New York

Looking for anyone who is applying to NCC for Spring / January start ( or anyone else on the road to applying) who wants others in the same situation to go through the process with.

Dogmom67, which fundamentals and test success book did you use?

Hey Dogmom! Congrats on finishing 101. Where are you having clinicals for 105?

Honestly, I did not use any accessory books. All the material for the tests come directly from Brunner, so don't side track yourself with other materials other than your notes and the textbook. The reading list does have some Kozier on it, but I felt the Kozier stuff was just to help you understand the Brunner book more, but Brunner is really all you need to pass the tests along with your notes. If you want to buy a med-surg book that has practic questions you should, because there are no practive questions at the end of the Brunner book, but as far as other books to study from, just stick to the Brunner textbook and your powerpoint slides.

Honestly, I LOVED 105. I was scared going into it because I heard so many people say how hard med-surg would be, and that it is the hardest semester in the program, but I found it alot easier than 101. You actually learn about diseases and the human body and questions are based diseases and what you learned, rather than all those communication questions that 101 had. I was in Glen Cove Hospital for 105 and I absolutely loved it - my professors were absolutely wonderful.

In 105 you will learn so much, and I found the experience to be fun an exciting. I definately became more confident in 105 and now I really "feel like a nurse".

If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

Milijs - I used "Nugent and Vitale" Test Success and Fundementals. The authors are former NCC professors and they helped alot.

Kuklara - thank you again. I will be in Franklin Square for 105, simply because Glen Cove schedule didn't work with my work schedule. Very sad about that, because my entire study/friend group is going to Glen Cove. :(

I see Brunner has a Q & A book avail. I think I will get that one. Seems that the material in 105 is more fact based and less theory, so I am trying to get a grasp on it prior to Sept.

Also- IrishCook was in my class and we became very good friends. I was just telling her how you have been so helpful over the past year or so. Seem she knows you. ;) Perhaps we three can get together one day for lunch or a cocktail.

Have a great summer!

-D

Dogmom - The Brunner question and answer book has NO many mistakes in it believe it or not. A few of my classmates and I had it and some of the answers that they put down as being correct were actually incorrect, and we proved that by looking it up in the textbook so be careful with that.

I actually originally met Irishcook at Farmingdale, she is such a sweetheart. I would love to meet up one day!

Grindin, I am starting 203 in fall. I am going to be at LIJ - how do they expect you to find street parking on Lakeville Road LOL? WIll they allow you to park it in the garage and pay for it if you want? Are you a NCC graduate?

You can pay for parking just for the convenience of it all, but personally street parking was never hard to find on the north side of Union Tpke unless I got there after 7:50AM. Worst comes to worst you can park on the south side of Union Tpke, there's a ton of parking there. Your best bet is always in the vicinity of 269th st and 77th ave.

I hope you have Prof. * for your Peds rotation, she'll change the way you think.

If you're into Indian food, Platinum Palace close by has a terrific lunch buffet for 8 bucks.

And Yes! I just graduated this spring. It'll be all over before you know it. Opinions are always subjective, but I would have to say 203 is the toughest. The content can get confusing between cardiac and psych. Then throw in the 3 in 1 NPR's and extra assignments. I surely hope they're doing something about those NPR's.

Does anyone have their syllabus info for any nursing classes ( most preferably nur101, but will appreciate any of them)? I would appreciate it if you could post up the topics, I would like to get a head start on some reading considering I will be working and doing this program together.

Milijs - Do you know how to PM? Can you try to PM me? I have it ALL!!

Omg dogmom67 you are such a sweetheart! Thank you soooo much! For some reason I can't pm or respond to your pm but these are the books I have if u can pm me the syllabus please: handbook of nursing diagnosis 13th Ed by carpenito-moyet, fundamentals of nursing: concepts, process & practice 9th Ed by berman kozier & erb, Saunders nursing survival guide:pharmacology 2nd edition by mccuistion & gutierrez, williams' basic nutrition & diet therapy 13th Ed by Nix and Brunner & Suddarth's textbook of medical surgical nursing 12th Ed by smeltzer. Thanks soo much!!!

Milijs and New Nurses

First , Congrats to all of you. First semester 101, tests are based mostly on Kozier Fundementals book. first chapters are 16,17,.23, 42 .

Second - do yourselves a favor and get Fundementals success and Test success by Nugent and Vitale. The books give type of questions that you will have on the exams with a "rationale" for the correct AND incorrect answers. HUGELY helpful.

Don't be so afraid of the drop/kick out rate. My 101 class we lost a total of 5 of 24. Most left on thier own due to low grades and fear of failing final. You will have to put alot of time/effort into it but it's worth it. Attend PASS classes regularly, NPR classes and Clinical workshops - and you should be fine.

Grindin, thanks for all your help. I sent you a personal message.

I never got anything. Feel free to email me: [email protected]

I was just curious about a few things:

- do we reuse all the same textbooks we used for nur101 for nur102, or do we purchase different ones?

-are the days categorized so we know which textbook to bring on what day ( ex. Medsurg on monday and pharmacology on Thursday) or do we just bring all the textbooks everyday?

- do we take textbooks/notebooks to the hospital?
