Nassau Community College : Anyone Applying for Spring 2011

U.S.A. New York

Looking for anyone who is applying to NCC for Spring / January start ( or anyone else on the road to applying) who wants others in the same situation to go through the process with.

I was an evening student and we didn't need to bring any textbooks with us to class (not sure if was different for the day classes). From 101 to 105 you'll probably use the same books (Fundamentals and Med/Surg) and then 203 and 204 you'll have to get a few new ones for Maternity and Peds to add to your library. You will probably get power points with the lecture for the day so bring them with you if you have to print it out at home. This way you can follow and take notes during class. Our clinical instructors used to tell us to make sure someone in the group had a Med/Surg textbook with them for clinical in case one of use needed to look something up, but a lot of people used their phones because it was faster.

Hi Milijs, I never had to bring a text to class ( or clinical) except the Davis Drug Guide for Clinical but not until towards mid-semester. The only time I had a book with me is if I was meeting a study group. Risgirl is correct about using the same books for 101 and 105( 2nd semester). Not sure about third and fourth semester yet. Your professor will likely ask you to make an account on Blackboard to obtain the powerpoints. It's easier to take notes if you print the PP presentation prior to class.

I did use the med surg text for doing Nursing Process Records, but not in clinical. Our clinical instructors asked us not to bring too much to clinical, since we would be leaving our goods in the staff break room and didn't want us to "take over".

Good luck and How's your reading going? :)

-D

Risgirl: wow, not at all what I expected. Thanks!!

DogMom67: thanks, the reading is coming along good so far. I really can't wait to get the first semester over with to get the hang of this. And I really can't wait for the end of the fourth semester!!

Its helpful to peruse the text at this point, but don't delve too much into the minor details. I see a lot of students making that mistake, then when it comes time to take the exam your mind gets too cluttered. Stick to the basics the professors highlight and discuss on the powerpoints, that's already a lot of work in of itself.

I rarely used my texts unless I needed to clarify something or for the process records. And most importantly take deep breaths before and during the exams and just RELAX! The nervous and the nitpicky people tend not to do so well.

If you need any texts, feel free to PM me, don't pay an arm and a leg at the book store.

Thanks grindin26! That was very helpful!

Does anyone know if you can still get the blue slip after the summer deadline? I had to re do a titer after 30days but that surpasses the deadline. The nurses wont give me a blue slip although I had the vaccination done. Any suggestions?

You can still hand in your blue slip after summer.

Will health services give it to me after the summer deadline?? And will profs accept it after the first week of class?

I left the program at Nassau and now enrolled in a BSN program and it's so much easier. I feel lucky and blessed!!!

How long since the class started did u start clinicals?! I heard the bsn is tough but well worth it! I read that gloeckner is not so nice.

I would also like to know ii want to go to Molloy

If you're scheduled to go to the hospital 3 weeks into the program, what happens on the day you're scheduled within those weeks....do u attend regular class on campus with the same time scheduled for the hospital?
