My poor sister-can yall help?

Published

I was wondering if yall could please read this and tell me what you think. My sister has had some problems lately, she describes it as back and stomach pain, trouble sleeping, n/v, hot but feeling cold at the same time, "feels like the food is at the top of your throat-feel really full". But it only occurs around her period, or when she eats greasy food. She usually curls up in a fetal position to lessen the pain. The dr. (OBGYN) said it was menstrual cramps, but when it hits, she is in so much pain and usually falls asleep with her head in the toilet. Only happens about once or twice a month. Could it be gallstones? I think it's a little more severe than menstrual cramps. Thanks for yalls time! Please let me know what yall think

The only suggestion I could offer is; if you sister is not satisfied with the doctor's conclusion, tell her to seek another doc's opinion. Another suggestion is to surf the net for more information relating to menstruation. Perhaps, you can get a greater understandings of signs and symtoms.

Good luck...

Just a few more questions, is the pain around the abdomen fixed or moving?

Does it feel better when you press down on the area or does it get worse?

Does she have any taste in her mouth? or is it normal?

Any signs of redness in the face or red eyes?

Does she have loose stool or is it normal or constipated

Also how is her appetite?

Sorry for all the wierd questions just need some more info

i'm going to agree with mandykal here - get another opinion.

perhaps this would be more in the domain of an internist rather than an obgyn?

i wish her the best of luck :-)

I have something similar right before my period every month. Stomach pain and bloating so bad i cannot stand up and I feel so nauseated I just lay in the bathroom floor sometimes. I eat and then feel like it is backing up in my throat. I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowl Syndrome. Apparantly my period is an irritant! I help it by taking Gas-X and eating a very very bland diet the week before and during my period. NO dairy, grease, acidic foods, or too many carbs. I also just eat very small "snack meals' throughout the day. It helps keep it bearable. And when I am hurting really bad, I lay on my stomach on top of a heating pad.

Agree with the second opinion. An Ob-Gyn will look for Ob-Gyn problems. Not necessarily the physician's fault, sort of a "default" position. But a couple of other ideas occurred to me while reading your post. One, IBS, was already discussed.

Another. Have her see a physician for a gall bladder work up. Some of the symptoms you describe could describe cholelithiasis or biliary dyskinesia. In any event, she needs to see a family practice type person, who will look at a somewhat larger picture.

Agreed, Kevin - it's the old adage - "When your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail :D."

Could be menstral cramps. I got the pain and N/V with mine. Could be as one poster said irritable bowel syndrome brought on by menses. My daughter has this.

Or you could do the smart thing and get another medical opinion.

Reguardless of the cause, it should not be left untreated.

PLEASE, do not discount menstral cramps. It is no small thing for many. It can be disabling. It is not normal. Though for years many of us took it as being normal, because our mothers suffered it. If you are having cramps this severe or n/v with them there is a porblem.

With me it was endometriosis, and fibroids. Pain is telling you something.

When I was younger, the first day of my period was spent curled up in a ball with a heating pad alternating between by stomach, and my lower back. I was nauseated, and the pain was just awful. Much easier now that I'm older, but I still develop indigestion/heartburn the few days before my period, along with abd distention. I agree with getting a second opinion, though. Just too many possibilities.

BTW, you wouldn't be from 'lil 'ole Texas now, would you? I can 'hear' your accent, in your post. Welcome to the board!

Thank yall so much for your opinions. I'll pass it on to her-I know she appreciates it! Hope yall have a good day!:)
