My New Stethoscope!!!

Published

I bought a new Littmann Master Cardiology Stethoscope today. It cost me around $170, but its worth it (besides, my job is reimbursing me since I'm on their scholarship program lol) The Spragues that came in our nursing kit are horrible. Sure, you can hear the heart sounds, along with my own breathingn, the tubes rubbing together and every other outside sound in the world. This Littmann works great.

Sorry for sounding goofy, I'm just excited. Got my student loan refund today and its the first thing I bought lol.

i've had 2 master cardios and both have been stolen from my workplace.

so now i'm in the market for #3, permanently attached to my neck.

and nursemike, you'll always be able to hear bronchial sounds but not always heart sounds.

heart sounds can be muffled for a variety of reasons.

and sometimes you don't auscultate the apex but the aortic arch where the sound/pulse will be more prominent.

anyway, on ebay they're advertising this new stethoscope for $40 and testimonials SWEAR that it's better than the master cardiology.

should i bite and buy it???

I always believe in going with what you know. I've had people tell me certain brands were better than the Littmanns, but from going to the store and looking at, holding and using different stethescopes, the Littmann just seemed like better quality even for the price. Remember, you get what you pay for.

I was at the NSNA annual meeting last March and there was a sales rep for this new type of scope that had the tube connected at a 90 degree angle to the diaphragm. I could hear my heart through a towel that had been folded 16 times. However, I just could not bring my self to pay $100 for it. It seemed like it worked but I went with the master cardio

Sounds interesting. What I like about the master cardio isnt so much what you hear, but what you DON'T hear. That thing lets you hear just what your listening for and not the tubes rubbing together, the person breathing, myself breathing, the bp cuff rustling, the person's body hair, my fingers moving, etc, etc. And since I work in a nursing home, some of the people I've had to take vitals on, especially when they're critical, are VERY hard to hear...this scope will make it that much easier.

Thanks for the advice. A raging ear infection may have had something to do with it, too. I don't know. I actually heard stomach sounds while doing a BP, last week (not a bruit, and it might not actually have been through the scope--the pt heard it, too.)

Anyway, ear infection's gone. Think I might bleach my stethoscope tips before I use it again.

 hi, this may be a dumb question, but i've been wondering about this for a while now. how do you keep the earpieces from making mincemeat of you inner ears?? the few times i've used a stethoscope i felt like those earpieces were going to break through and meet at the middle!! they hurt! now, my brother is sending me his steth., i dunno what brand it is but it cost $180 so i'm hoping they won't be too uncomfortable to wear.

enlighten me please... leslie :p

you can buy earpads for it. the littman's come with them. perhaps they sell spares on the net...

I had my master cardiology , name engraved on it, it was stolen, by a med student i never saw again who asked to borrow it during a code.

I bought a new one, b/c its the only one I can hear out of...

now my motto is if you need to borrow mine ....go buy your own...it never leaves my neck... haha...can't afford a 3rd one:chuckle

I have the classic SE II and love it, also have the infant littman. I am a littman lover.
