My living situation while in Nursing school

I need some advice. During the weekends when I’m not at school I do a lot of self reflection and lately I’ve been thinking about how I’m 31 and still living with my parents due to nursing school. Luckily, my mom is really supportive and wants me to really focus on school but at my age it’s kind of embarrassing to know I’m still living with my parents. I’m working part time and help my parents when I can but the money I make isn’t enough to really help out as much as I would like to. Sometimes I feel useless because I expected to be in a better situation at my age. Is it common for nursing students to live with their parents? Also I go to school full time so that’s why I can’t work as much as I would like to.

I completely understand.. im 34 and had to move back. thankfully my family supports me as well. I don't like asking for money so I would try to avoid having to ask for anything because of the current situation. I also just received a job offer with a major hospital, less than 3 miles from my house, working 1-6pm 4 times a week and my mom doesn't want me to take it because of the demand of an accelerated program. I have to agree its pretty demanding we had 2 midterms and a final in a 7 day turn around (seriously)! so I'm having to really consider turning down the job offer because of the demand.

Wow 2 midterms and a final ??‍♀️ That’s very accelerated! I was also in an accelerated nursing program but ended up withdrawing because I just couldn’t keep up. I switched to another cohort that moves at a slightly slower pace and I’m doing way better. Congrats on the job offer! I know that will be a hard decision to make.

Yes it is very accelerated but it’s because one course ended in the middle of the second course. Thankfully after clinical training the schedule changes completely and is more open ?? I’m glad you found a cohort that worked for you! And thank you it seems like the new job is willing to work with my schedule so we shall see!

don't fret ,this is normal , in many cultures and situations,as long as you remember them when you are done. Many students who were living with their husbands and children needed and  got much more help than a single living at home.

Your goal is to graduate ,find employment and then decide what to do,hopefully you will stay at home long enough to pay off loans, build a small nest egg/emergency fund, so be smart about it.You are luckey to have supportive parents ut don't wear out your welcome,be kind and helpful in return. Best of luck.

Sigh.... I STILL fight with myself over this. I am older than you too!

If Independence is what you want, just plan for it. And write down your feelings. For me, regret over education/ past career choices. lots of millennials feel this way.

That is very true! And no I never take my parents help for granted. The  journey I had to take just to get me to this point is a daily reminder of my many blessings. I will always be forever grateful ?

I can imagine!! It seems like this topic is very underrated and forums similar to this  is proof that we are feeling the weight of our decisions (or the lack thereof) from our past but we are learning to embrace less than ideal situations until things shift in our favor. I want to encourage you to still pursue your dreams! I have several classmates who are much older than me so there’s still opportunity if you are able to take the plunge?
