My Hands are a mess in the winter!

Published

I need help! Apparently I have inherited my mom's gene for cracking/sore hands in the wintertime. I have tried lots of lotions including Eucerin, Vaseline intensive care, etc. I know this is just going to get worse due to all the handwashing I'm doing as well.

I am noticing the beginning of the dryness starting again, and I really really don't want a sore mess this winter. Not to mention the fact that I don't want yucky hands around sick patients.

Any ideas are welcome.

My mother has the same problem and when hers start cracking she uses some stuff she got from Mary Kay, she also suggests Skin-So-Soft. Except that SSS can tend towards the greasy side. The Mary Kay stuff works wonderfully, but it's also spendy.

I have a problem with my skin peeling around my nails and my nails peel also.

I did try the Mary Kay stuff in the past...but got a horrible case of hives/eczema from it.

I've been slathering on Aveda's Hand Relief and it does help...but I do occasionally still find some small areas peeling, but not nearly as bad as it was.

Badger Healing Balm at night. L'Occitane shea butter during the day.

Anything thick and creamy I can smear all over my hands and feet at night, then on go the gloves and socks. At least once a week I do the parrafin wax things...on my day off. It helps a lot.

For the rest of my skin Hemp or cocoa butter body butters from the body shop day and night.

might be helpful to see the dermatologist for a diagnosis. Could be a problem that requires meds. I had a horrible time till the MD gave me a steroid ung..

Avoid stuff that has fragrance to it. That will only aggravate the problem.

because i grew up on a farm in wisconsin, i know that the best hand cream is not a hand cream. it's udder cream. udderly smooth udder cream from drugstore.com (if you can't find it locally) works wonders. or any other udder cream you can find. frost guard or weather guard are my faves, but now that my folks are out of the dairy industry, i can't find it anymore.

this is different from bag balm, which works well on dry, cracked feet. bag balm is a greasy, sticky mess. udder cream absorbs quickly so you can get on with what you're doing without a greasy mess on your hands.

Sometimes the only places to find some of the cow and horse stuff is Southern States Co-Op, Tractor Supply, or any other farm supply store. And sometimes they offer the huge jars cheaper.

Ruby,

I did find this:

Is this what you meant?

Edited to add: I forgot to mention I did try Bag Balm once and totally agree...was like putting butter on my hands, ick!

that's the stuff! thanks for the link. i just ordered a tub of it. and it even comes from my home state!:)

Ruby,

Great, glad I could help! I also ordered some just now as well. I am hopeful of the results, it looks as though it has a lower concentration of widely-used hospital antimicrobial (chloroxylenol 1%) in it too which is a plus.

I'll let you all know how it works!

P.S. That is my home state as well, hence the huge problems in winter!

I agree with the crack cream & the udder balm, I just tried using theis grape butter ( from Walmart) there's other scents too. Sofar so good but winter isn't even here yet. Good luck! The socks and gloves at night really do help too.

Walmart used to sell Udder Cream in the craft dept as well as in the lotion area. If you can't find it there try a Farm & Fleet, or any farm supply store.
