My boss is stealing narcotics......

Published

Last week I experienced the worst day of my career. My RN supervisor took some Vicodin.

For the last 2 years I have been concerned with narc sheets that looked like a 2 year old scribbled on them with cross outs and scratched out entries etc. and our counts are off more than on. This was usually the case when I would "follow" the RN (she would leave for days off and I came on).

Well.....a week ago I followed the RN and now I am working my 3 days on. I find the note that she wrote regarding the migraine and taking the 10 Vicodin. Needless to say I feel like puking. The Vicodin ends up being off 13 instead of 10 (per her note) and when I pull the narc sheet we find it is off 20!!!

So, long story short....we turn her in. That was last Wednesday.

Opinions? Advice?

I agree with the previous poster, document everything. You mentioned you are worried she may be setting you up. If that is a possible you definately need to doucment everything for your own protection.

Good luck on it

Something is wrong with this story. According to the OP the counts when she follows this RN have "been off more than on," but now all the sudden the RN is making a written confession. And on a med that was suppose to be dumped? The pieces just aren't adding up for me.

from the time that the person is suspected of diverting drugs to the actual time that they are taken out of work is long, very long. So know that you did the right thing also are your "big cheeses" going to report this to the police & office of professionals.

I PM'd Posh Girl to explain that to protect myself, I am currently unable to give a fact by fact depiction of everything.

Didn't I read on an old post on this same subject, "My job description does not include being a martyr"????

Nuff said.....I REALLY appreciate all the posts! I feel validated that I DID do the right thing.

Has anyone contacted the federasl drug agents? I have been told that this is by federal law. If the management does not do this, you are obligated to do so, as you identified the missing drug. :nono::o:innerconf

She should be reported to TPAPN (Texas Peer Assistance Program for Nurses).
There's a good probability that the impaired nurse is not licensed in Texas, so the Texas BNE would have absolutely no jurisdiction over her.

Welllll, the reporting is part of an over-all pre-existing issue here. I have been told that at no time, under no circumstances am I to EVER contact an outside agency for any reason. I do have "people" watching my back and we are watching and waiting. Personally I liked the part where the RN was told to call BON herself. I'm waiting for the episode of COPS where they tell the murderer to fill out the report, at his convienence and then drive himself to jail (like Otis on Andy Griffith)! Where's Barney when ya need him?

What a terrible situation to be in! Document everything. And don't take her attitude to heart. All addicts are at first ****** off at the person who busts them. As they get better, they tend to love that person. :heartbeat

I'm just not feeling the love here.....the day that the poo hit the fan and I thought I was going to stroke out from the stress; she came up to me and said she "knew what I did" and I "did the right thing". That was last week, now I am the bad guy and my co-worker (who also reported her) is getting the sweet phone calls asking if she is ok etc!

So not feeling the love!

WOW. She should have been sent for immediate drug testing, fired for theft and her license should be in jeapordy. Being allowed to continue working, especially alone, is ridiculous. And she's a supervisor? I'm sorry but if her migraine was that bad, she should have visited a Dr and got her own dang pain meds instead of stealing them from a patient. Amazing.

Stupid question....will Vicodin show up on the standard pee test? We use them for our clientele....

That's absolutely wrong for them to tell you never to contact an outside agency. As a nurse and patient advocate there might be times you would need to do so in order to protect your patient and your license. I would get out of there. I fear you will become the scapegoat here when you did nothing wrong.

Did you write up an incident report and follow up your convo with a letter in writing to your superiors about this situation?! If you haven't you should get a paper trail started TODAY. You shouold also send a copy of that letter to HR and your Risk Manangement team. Someone stealing patient drugs is a big problem. They all need to be aware. I can tell you when this nurse will call the BON and report herself....NEVER.

Will they be mad you reached out to other departments?! Probably but that's not your problem or concern. You want to make sure your patients get their meds even when you aren't there and don't want her drug issue to cost you your license.

Did you keep that note?! I hope so.

thank you for your words of encouragement and support. allnurses, in an effort to protect me and with my permission, have edited some of the postings that had details that could threaten my anonymity. so, i cannot respond to your posting in detail. i will say that the items you mention have been addressed as they apply to the situation.
