My best friend got

D in Chemistry. She needs to take that again right?? Does it look bad when she gets into nursing program?? or she can't get in because of her prerequisites grade?? Any info would be appreciated.

It all depends on what the nursing school wants... It isnt always all about grades.

I would tell your friend to finish all of her pre-reqs and after she is done retake chemistry. A grade of D does look bad on his/her transcripts. Understand if they retake the class both grades stand together.

Things happen so just do better next time, one bad grade on a pre req wont end their nursing career.

I would suggest she talk to the nursing dept. The nursing program I went to wouldn't even consider an applicant until they had passed Chem with a C or better. Retaking it now while the info is still fresh might be a good idea. Depends on how many pre-reqs she has left, etc on how it would fit into her schedule.

Actually, this depends on the school. Although that D is there forever and always, gpa calculations differ. At some respected schools, the D is gone for good from gpa when the class is retaken. At other places, they are both included.

In any case, it will be shown on the transcript.

I agree with the above posts, this is not a career-ender unless she/he wants it to be.

I think that she should take it over. Im not sure what area you and your best friend are from but where I go to school, a D is a failing grade and MUST be taken over. At my local county college, Eng, A&P I and Chem are the pre-reqs needed before taking the NET and starting the program. All of the other classes are considered co-reqs. I wouldnt wait too long before taking it over as the info is still pretty fresh in her mind (hopefully) and she wouldnt want to take other classes while feeling stressed about the Chem class. She also doesnt want to have to deal with buying another text- and lab- book if the school choses to approve a different publishers book. (Schools review this once a year) As another post said, once the class is retaken, the grade may be replaced on the transcript, again depending on where you are. If your best friend had trouble understanding the professor, maybe www.ratemyprofessor.com may be able to help her in chosing who she registers with the next time. I hope that it helps.

You can substitute a grade. In other words the original grade stands but for GPA purposes the new class replaces the old in GPA calculations...

Thank you for your replies. I'll tell her about that. Did anybody get C in Chem and got into the program successfully??

She def. needs to speak to an acedemic couns. Some schools drop the first class grade entirely off your transcript, which is the case in my school. All it will say is that you took the class, but not give the grade. However, that means the the second class will count no matter what, so if she fails she is SOL. Thats how it works at my school anyway.
