MUSC ABSN Spring 2015

Published

Hi everyone!!!

I wanted to go ahead and make a thread for MUSC's Spring 2015 hopefuls. I know it is a little bit early to start this thread, but I am just so excited. I am looking forward to everyone stats and encouragement for each other. Looking forward to the results!!!

I could do that. I heard that clinicals were 12 hours. I drive to Conway and back 4 days a week for work now... about an hour each way. MUSC is a little over an hour depending on traffic. I would still prefer to live there if I can though

That's not to bad, they do have a service to help provide you listings http://www.musc.edu/housing

So how are your stats? Also, Did you take the teas test for hgtc?

Yes, I got in at HGTC with the TEAS. I got a 94. my cGPA is a 3.4. not sure about the prereq, but I have a 4.0 for my Associates which includes all my sciences. All taken at HGTC and York Tech in Rock Hill. I have worked as a CNA for about a month and a half 2 years ago, but no volunteering. What else? Oh yeah, the essay...I had no idea there was so much emphasis on it. I wrote something kind of poetic, I think. Didn't even save it. I was trying to find it last night, but I do remember I was going to use the male angle, but changed it to something more from the heart.

I spoke with someone from the nursing department about what they are looking for in the essay regarding diversity and I originally took it from a culture angle but I think what they want is how you will contribute to the diversity of nursing as a profession since there are so many different avenues someone can take as a nurse such as bed side nursing, NP, CRNA, nurse midwife, research nurse...etc.

The essay was definitely killer I think I rewrote mine 5 times!

That's funny originally mine was a poem but everyone talked me

out of it. So instead my last line was inside rhyme/couplet

I graduated from HGTC with my a health science degree. I was accepted into the spring class but declined to apply to MUSC. So hopefully I get in!! HGTC is 5 semesters for an ADN and MUSC is 4 semesters for a BSN. Ultimately MUSC is the better option in my opinion.

Kim,

Mine was somewhere in between the two. I never really thought about the career angle. That would've been a good way to go with it... I was pretty confident in my essay though.

I added personal touches to mine too! I don't think there is a certain format that is just how the lady I spoke with said I should approach the essay. I opened with my past experiences in a thesis statement and finished the essay with how they related to how I could contribute to being a pediatric nurse practitioner or nurse midwife. Hopefully it gets me in!! I'm sure we will all get in and can all be classmates :) with MUSC now accepting 80 people and about 230 applied those are good odds!!

I'm just worried about my lack of clinical experience. I have a little though'

I'm worried about everything haha. One minute, I think I will get in. The next minute, I fell like I won't! I just want some closure.. any day now!

Oh yeah, that's what i did too if I recall. I started out with a sentence that contained four or five points and then I elaborated on those with some poetic heartfelt stuff. Its starting to come back to me now. I remember it was something about how people had helped me and I wanted to return the favor.

I really don't know what they're looking for. I've seen people get in from all different spectrums. When I was selected as an alternate I still had work in progress and little hospital experience. When I was rejected I had completed my coursework with A's in all prereq work and was a current employee of MUSC working in their Chest Pain Center ER. Now I work for the Hollings Cancer Center in research and 3 girls that previously worked here started the ABSN program this past August. So hopefully working in research makes it happen for me. But it is very difficult to see a consistency in their selection process.

So I thought about talking about the cultural aspect and how me being a minority could contribute to the nursing profession. But I re-read the question and in my opinion, I don't think that that was what they were asking for. So, instead I talked about how me currently working in forensic psychiatry and dealing with inmates would bring a different perspective to the class because not too many people get to say I talk to or interact with inmates on a daily basis. They are an underrepresented group that believe it or not, needs medical care just like anyone else, despite their crimes. I am also in the process of pursuing a commission with the USPHS and hope to work for the Bureau of Prisons...(hope that works out!) So that's the angle I took with my essay if anyone cares...I hope it wasn't too drastic LOL.
