Insurance for me and hubby costs about $700/month, with a $3,000 deductible. We don't have vision or dental insurance.

We are self employed and pay $775/month out of pocket for for medical coverage for a family of 4 which excludes maternity, mental health and substance abuse. No dental or vision, and our deductible is $5K per year. Prescriptions are not covered until we meet our deductible.

I hope this puts into perspective what the actual cost of insurance is, as opposed to the employee cost when an employer contributes to premiums.

I've got a pretty good idea of what the employer pays for insurance. I was on COBRA for 6 months. It cost me $695/month.

I pay $110/month for just myself. This is medical coverage only, I have no vision or dental. I am part of an HMO, so my preventative care visists are free. My plan is completely out of pocket, so I think I have a good deal.

Every time I see of these figures, I'm absolutely astounded at the cost!!  $600+ PER MONTH with $5000 deductible per year??? Does that mean that you pay out of pocket for everything for the first few months of the year until you have paid $5000, and then insurance kicks in? And then you still have to pay $15 and $20 copays at each visit?

I'm in Canada. My family of 4's provincial health coverage is $114/month (I don't pay this, it's paid by my employer). This included all doctor's visits, diagnositic tests, hospital stays, surgeries, follow ups. This is the same amount that would be paid by any family of 4 or more in my provice, with a certain income level. If the income is lower, the amount paid is lower. If a family is very low income, this amount is eliminated and covered for them by the provinical government.

My employer also pays for "extended benefits" for myself, husband and children. This includes all prescriptions, dental, vision, paramedical services like massage, podiatry, chiropractor. This would cost my family of 4 about $300 month if I were to pay it privately. My employer also pays for my LTD coverage, a small life insurance policy, accidental death and dismemberment and pension.
