Mt. SAC Nursing program - HESI questions to those who have taken it. Help.

Published

Looks like I might be admitted into the Spring 2012 term as an alternate. After two years of waiting, finally. I was this close to tossing the towel and move onto my alternative major.

Anyway, here's what I know: No calculator, 4 hour time limit. Subjects: A&P, Math, Grammar, Reading/Vocab.

1) Is the reading and vocabulary combined to one section?

2) Is each section timed to a certain time limit like in the TEAS? Or is it straight up 4 hours?

3) Is the exam based on the HESI 2nd edition? My study guide is the 2nd edition.

4) How many questions for each section?

I tried contacting the faculty, spoke with the secretary but she doesn't know the answers to my questions.

That's all, and thanks in advance.

if i remember correctly. A/P are only 30 questions. the rest are 50-55 each

you'll have up to 4 hours to finish ( including registration).

i took 2 hours.

fairly easy. good luck

adding to my previous response.

you get to pick which section you want to do. as long as you finish all the required tests within 4 hours, you're fine.

And you took the test on campus at Mt. Sac right? When did you go, and how are you doing in the program?

yes, we take it at the LTC at Mt.Sac, took it about a month ago

LTC, what part on campus is it located? I heard it was taken in the Library. I take it you got the letter too for Spring '12? Or the letter that you must confirm "declaration" by taking the exam from Oct - Dec?

I really doubt you'll use the whole 4 hours. Two sounds about right. You either know the answers or don't, (especially A/P) an extra two hours aren't going to help, the test isn't big enough to require four hours.

I took my HESI within a year of having my A/P classes, so for those questions it was a little easier to remember. I wish you good fortune on taking your HESI after such a long wait, I don't know how I would do now. My score was a 91.8%, and the class average was 79%, just to give you an idea. That was February of '10. However, I believe the score is cumulative, so don't worry. It's just a weeding out process. With that said, I know they've stated that in the near future it will finally be a point system and not lottery.

So you're just barely taking the HESI after a two year wait? They didn't have you take it earlier? I applied in '09 and had to take mine so after.

For sure. I took the HESI in March of this year (Math, grammar, reading, vocabulary) at west coast university (uncredited school & very expensive...stay away), however mt.sac won't accept it since they didn't test me on A&P.

The test was straightforward, but given that experience I should focus on the vocabulary. That said, the vocabulary is a totally separate section, right? I forgot. With 50 questions or so...

The first letter was for declaration to attend the program. By doing so it's mandatory to take the HESI Oct-Dec. I calculated my lottery number for Spring '13 assuming no one declines or drops out of the waiting list.

The second letter is totally different. I got chosen as an alternate for Spring '12 (Thank God...sick and tired of the waiting). I have to attend orientation Jan 10th-12th and take the HESI the 31st of that same month.

I have plenty of time to study up. I'm so glad I wasted my time per se taking the exam at WCU. I know somewhat what to expect.

Does the A&P portion go in depth? Should I know like every bone and muscle in the human body? Thank you!

I haven't taken it yet, but per my past TEAS experience use the study guide as a guide, and use your A&P book to read more about each section.

For example, there are 12 cranial nerves...that's all the TEAS study guide had down, then in the test I was expected to know each cranial nerve and their function. I got pretty upset. Took A&P I back in 2008 so I had trouble remembering.

Don't take chances. I hope this helps you.

It does go in depth but it is SOOOOO random. I took the HESI not long after I finished my sciences, I got an A in anatomy, chemistry, micro, and a B in physio. But some of those questions were crazy. It made me wonder if I took the right classes! LOL I did better than I thought I would, just go with your first impulse in answering. And remember that the whole score is not based solely on your A&P. You also don't need a high score to pass, BUT, they will be implementing their new admission requirements which will place students by their overall scores, gpa's, etc... Good luck!

That's not true. Those who applied prior to their new admission requirements follow the old style. I believe I read that on their website.

To chime in yet again, the more you know, the more chances you have in passing. Use the study guide as a guide and go from there. You NEED your A&P book in hand.
