Just thought I'd toss out a friendly note that Mt. SAC (city of Walnut) has finally REOPENED applications to their ADN program starting SPRING 2014. Those that apply right now up until the last date which I think is somewhere in October will be applying for spring of 2014, and so on. It was closed for about a year to a year and a half due to switching acceptance systems from Lottery-based to Multi-Criteria Screening. The main reason for the closure was to ensure that every person left on the lottery system had gotten into the program before switching to the new one (makes it fair on part of those that have been waiting).
The multi-criteria screening is basically like the point system. You get a certain number of points based on your core requisite GPA, overall GPA, hospital experience, any degrees, and so on. Some of your points come from your core-requisite GPA (anatomy, physiology, and microbiology) which is 40 points, then next is your score on the HESI test which is a max of 30, and then your overall GPA/if you hold a bachelors which is another 10 each. There are a couple others but they give less than 10 points. You can google the Mt. SAC ADN program and look at the specifics yourself and how many points you have.
Some quick notes:
They accept 60 students every semester (fall and spring) but they can accept up to 90 depending on the budget (but of course in these days, it'll most likely stay at 60). There is a 4 day mandatory orientation, ALL day (no lie...) prior to the start of the semester where all accepted students AND alternates must attend. If you need clarity on anything, call the nursing department and they'd definitely give you more of a heads up than I have done.
So yeah, good luck to you all and hopefully last long enough for you guys to see me in third/fourth semester
Honestly, there is not a much a big difference between the current edition versus the older edition; however, use the older edition at your own risk. It's better to use a current edition. Let's say you are using the older edition and a quiz question you got wrong but your edition says otherwise. The instructor may look to the newer edition and discover it is not in there and claim that you are still wrong because you are using an older edition. This never happened, but it CAN happen.Ok, so you would be using the older edition at your own risk!! Do you know anything about international textbooks? I really don't have a lot of money so I am trying to cut back as much as I can. Every little bit would help. I really appreciate you taking the time and informing us about Mt.Sac.

I don't know much about the international books. I DO know that I've used those for regular GE classes (such as biology and physiology) because they were cheaper and from what I can remember, they were exactly the same. So...again it's all up to you guys on where you get the books. I NEVER EVER buy from the bookstore, always overpriced. I got all my books from Amazon. Some of my friends got theirs off craigslist and off other semester students. Yeah, a lot of us are broke college students haha, but if you qualify for fasfa-in particular, pell grant, you should be fine. I know of some classmates that pulled out some loans just to cover the 2 years (which actually isn't not too bad considering how much cheaper CC is compared to UC).
Does everyone attend orientation in June regardless if starting in the fall or spring? At that point we have an idea of the class schedule too I assume? My counselor emailed with dates of 6/17-6/19 for orientation.
I think it's just the people who are alternates and going to start in the Fall.
UPDATE!! (Ok, not a really big update, but I know some of you will want to hear this...)
I emailed my counselor about an unrelated thing... Here's what she said at the end of her email...
"I'm hoping the email letters will go out tomorrow because I'm doing my final checks today. You should know by Monday at the latest if you are an alternate."

Thanks for sharing!
Congrats to those that will start in fall as well to alternates (because that means for sure you are in the program).
Heads up, but look into joining CNSA (California Nursing Student Association). It's the nursing club (exclusive to nursing students only). You will hear about us during your orientation :).

I am starting in the Spring and I am looking into a lot of programs. Are you a member of the Caduceus Club too? I want to join the CNSA club but do you have to be attending nursing school that semester?
Thanks

I was a member for Caduceus in the past, but didn't care much for it tbh. And yes, you have to be a current nursing student in order to be in CNSA

Ask around, other semesters are always willing to sell some of their books, I did. I usually prefer to buy a book versus renting because I like to get some money. The problem with renting books for nursing school is that you won't be able to use them as reference in the future, especially if you want to review for NCLEX. Some books are used throughout the 2 years, especially the med surge book. So all in all, it would be wise to buy the book versus renting, but that's just me. I don't know of anyone that is renting a book.
