Mt. SAC (Mt. San Antonio College) 2014 apps are reopened!

Published

Just thought I'd toss out a friendly note that Mt. SAC (city of Walnut) has finally REOPENED applications to their ADN program starting SPRING 2014. Those that apply right now up until the last date which I think is somewhere in October will be applying for spring of 2014, and so on. It was closed for about a year to a year and a half due to switching acceptance systems from Lottery-based to Multi-Criteria Screening. The main reason for the closure was to ensure that every person left on the lottery system had gotten into the program before switching to the new one (makes it fair on part of those that have been waiting).

The multi-criteria screening is basically like the point system. You get a certain number of points based on your core requisite GPA, overall GPA, hospital experience, any degrees, and so on. Some of your points come from your core-requisite GPA (anatomy, physiology, and microbiology) which is 40 points, then next is your score on the HESI test which is a max of 30, and then your overall GPA/if you hold a bachelors which is another 10 each. There are a couple others but they give less than 10 points. You can google the Mt. SAC ADN program and look at the specifics yourself and how many points you have.

Some quick notes:

They accept 60 students every semester (fall and spring) but they can accept up to 90 depending on the budget (but of course in these days, it'll most likely stay at 60). There is a 4 day mandatory orientation, ALL day (no lie...) prior to the start of the semester where all accepted students AND alternates must attend. If you need clarity on anything, call the nursing department and they'd definitely give you more of a heads up than I have done.

So yeah, good luck to you all and hopefully last long enough for you guys to see me in third/fourth semester

I am not sure but it looks like there might not be school on Fri. If you have clinicals on the weekend maybe you can be off on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday is a 3 hour day. I think you might be able to work part time or 3/4 time. Have you talked to your employer to see if they will help subsidize your education? Or if you can change your schedule. Just a suggestion, I wish you all the best.

Thanks. I'm really hoping to work at least part time at my current job (they help with education $$), but I need a manager to approve that schedule...which is a mystery at this point haha I need orientation to get here quick so just have some definite answers ;)

Thanks for the info! I'm already an LVN, so I thought they automatically considered me for that (I did get points, yes). The counselor just told me it wasn't an option. Oh well ;) I feel better knowing it's only a semester that I'm technically repeating. It will be a good refresher! The class schedule during the week is what concerns me most as I HAVE to work. Again, I appreciate your info!

They actually do recommend LVNs start from the beginning because what it boils down to is that RN and LVNs are different and provide different levels of care. If anything, 1st semester will be a breeze for you and will be a great refresher in terms of the theory/grading system and get you pumped for 2nd semester. Good luck!

Just be cautious about working and try to work the least you can. I've suffered on a few exams because I had to take extra shifts; however, there are some amazing people in my class that still work full time AND have a family. They're friends I look up to. Anyways, if you can work and do school like me, more power to us! Especially if you already work in the health care setting.

Barcode, can you tell me how is the dosage and calculations? Do you have only one chance to pass test or how does that work? Do they offer remediation if you need help? Thanks.

I asked Barcode if students have to pass the dosage exam with a 100 percent and he said this:

No. You can miss a max of 3 questions out of 20 to pass each dosage calc exam (remember, you have one dosage calc exam for EACH class; don't worry though, they are all relatively similar problems with the exception of Pediatrics). If you fail the test, you get a second chance. Let's say you fail N1A dosage once, but you pass the retake test. If you fail N1B's dosage calc, you can still retake the exam (you basically have 2 tries for EACH dosage calc). If you fail the 2nd time consecutively, you are dropped.

Thank you!!!!! Thank Barcode too!! It's great to have good support form everyone!!

My appointment went well today! I'm so excited! I was even able to get more points for documents I located stating I worked full time while attending Cal Poly and Mt SAC. So It looks like I'll be seeing you ladies/gents in the spring! :)

Hi, what # are you? I am 102. I will be in the Spring too. Any new news that we should know?

Thanks

She didn't say which number, only that I should make arrangements to come to orientation in June! :D Btw... I swung into the book store and holy moly!!!! The books are so $$$. I'm hoping we can get one edition earlier.

Oh, I thought you were in for the Spring not the Fall. I guess I will see you in the Spring then.

If they say it's not wise to buy a book one edition older, then I would recommend renting the current edition on Chegg. It seems that nursing classes are exactly 2 months long based on the mtsac class schedule. Chegg allows you to rent for 3 months which is plenty of time to study and return. The books by the way range from $15 to $25 to rent.

Hi Davidz0rs, I was looking on a site that list international books. Do you know anyone that has used them. They say they are new and have a different cover but were made in another country that is why it is a lot cheaper. What do you think? I am going to try to investigate and get more info.
