MSW to PMHNP?! Please help

Published

Hi,

I was told today that people with grad degrees in other fields (social work for me) can bypass becoming an RN and become a PMHNP. Does anyone know anything about this? Please help. Thanks.

I would find that most unusual. Perhaps what they meant was there are direct RN-MSN programs which are called accelerated nursing programs for persons with prior degrees. There You still need the basic nursing background before you become a PMHNP. There are quite a few direct entry programs out there. Good luck!

That's what I thought. I guess I just misunderstood her.

I am not aware of any program. I have an MSW and in order to become a PMHNP, I attended an accelerated BSN program (second degree) and am now in my next to last semester of a PMHNP program. Because PMHNP programs are advanced nursing practice programs, there is no bypassing becoming a nurse (RN) first. One thought, you may look into direct entry masters programs which would help to speed the process a bit. Best of luck!

PsychNM are you completing an online program? Good luck both of you! I am interested in a PMHNP. What is your feeling about job availability? Thanks in advance.

My program is predominately online, but has required several on-campus visits throughout. They are no longer delivering the program as an "online" program. It is my understanding that the cohort they are admitting for Fall 2012 will not be able to complete the program at a distance. With respect to job availability, the market for PMHNPs is still very good (at least in the southwest). Best of luck!

Thanks for that info...I am very interested in this field. Best of luck to you!

I'm currently applying to direct entry PMHNP programs. Like others have said, to be a NP you must get your RN first. There are accelerated programs for those who have degrees in another field (such as myself). They are somewhat controversial. Good luck!
