I am going to assume this has been asked before, but I am curious to know the answers. I am currently looking for MSN and nurse practitioner schools that are online and do NOT require the GRE. I have already applied to Frontier and UC. I was hoping that someone over the years has made a list or could direct me to some more colleges. I would greatly appreciate this.
I have been a nurse for a couple years. Specializing in Psych and geri behavioral health and Emergency medicine. Nursing is a passion and a calling, and I want to pursue my advance degrees.
Schools are receiving a record number of applicants for NP programs. I applied to 5 schools and was accepted into one for fall 2011 (I was accepted into another program for the spring 2012). I have 7 yrs of ICU experience, CCRN, ACLS and TNCC certifications and what I thought was a good GPA (3.6 RN-BSN, 3.55 ADN). The schools that denied me basically attributed it to the large volume of applicants received.
I would encourage you to apply to several programs. I sent off the last application just for safe measure in June and it ended up being the school to accept me. I also found out that it's best to apply early (meaning as much time before the deadline as possible) and the odds for admission are greater for spring admission.
What about letters of intent.... How did you do them for so many schools..... I tend to tailor one great one a tweak it slightly.... It may have more than what t asks for but its darn good.
I applied to the one (and only one) that I felt was the best fit for me, and got in. My GPA was only 3.3. I think its important not to just go to the first school that accepts you, but to one that you feel is the best fit, and has a good track record.
I pretty much did the same when it came to my letters and essays. I had one that I tailored to fit each school's requirements so I ended up with similar but different essays for each school I applied to. I think you have a chance. Some schools look more into the nursing GPA or the last 60 credits and nursing experience while others focus on the total gpa and gre score.
I was still selective in choosing the schools to apply to (I applied to schools that were affiliated with large university medical centers). I inquired about their reputation and attended open houses and interviews. I was comfortable enrolling in the school that accepted me because I had researched their program before applying. Applying to multiple schools will increase your chances of being accepted. All they can do is tell you no, so keep the faith!!
Brandon, I think you should go for 7. Six is way to few! LOL. Just joking. I think it's a good idea to put out a lot of apps. I think admission to NP programs is getting more competitive because of the '2015 DNP' thing coming up. Anyway, go for 7, I live in Vegas and that's considered a lucky number.
