MSN at the bedside

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi I am currently a NICU nurse and would like to obtain my MSN but I would like to stay at the bedside rather than moving into a nurse practitioner role. Are there any programs that are geared toward bedside nursing at the master's level? I am particularly interested in an online program. Any advice from nurses with MSN at the bedside would be much appreciated!

Thanks

I have my MSN and was in management and education. Only downside is when I went back to bedside nursing I took a pay cut.

Our ur hospital doesn't allow NNP's to dual practice as a bedside nurse and NNP. Our NNPs are salary, bedside is not.

How is that different from a CNS?

A CNS focuses on the Macrosystem.

A CNL focuses on the Microsystem and patient outcomes.

Can you give me some real world examples?

You could get your MSN as a nurse practitioner but not take the certification exam, thus allowing you to still work as a bedside RN. If you decide in the future that you want to practice as a NP then you could take the certification exam. Although as I say that and I reflect on the recent posts like "I graduated 8 years ago, failed the NCLEX numerous times, and now want to get licensed and work as a nurse", I wonder if that would be a good idea because you would have to explain why you didn't sit for the certification exam upon graduating from graduate school. Hmm...

You're still cleaning up bodily fluids for the cost of a master's education.

Really? You must be basing that off of your observations. I don't see that where I work.

I'm basing that off how CNL works at my hospital (a major academic medical center that, incidentally, has one of the largest and most well-known CNL programs out there).

I am getting ready to start an MSN program in Informatics, I plan on staying at the bedside for at least a few years (partially due to tuition reimbursement requirements and partially, to apply what I am doing hands-on) I may go part time, but I do love the bedside still. Don't want to give it up until it becomes a hassle.
