Is anyone taking on-line courses at MGCCC this summer, or has anyone taken their on-line courses before? I just wanted to know what they were like, and if you had to go in for tests because I live 2 and 1/2 hours away plus I work a full time job right now.

JD today called and told me that they had a spot come open for the Aug. class and were sending me my packet! I am so excited and nervous.

Can't wait!

That's super hope2! I certainly hope you've got some deep pockets for the amount of extra stuff you'll have to buy. Yay anyway!

I hope they have some books left for you ems. It helps to relieve my tension when I can look at the material beforehand. I'm going to try to go ahead and buy the recommended books and study guides so I can get a head start. Good Luck!

That is cool Hope2, I start in Aug with you at JD.

Thanks Bumashes and ems. I guess I'll see you in August ems, good luck.

thanks for the info on the online classes. i am taking 15 hours online fall semester while working full time at camp shelby (lots of drive time there from the coast..lol), so i was getting a bit nervous about what to expect for the online portion.

good luck !

I graduated from MGCCC-JC May of 2005 and just wanted to say congrats and good luck to all of you about to start the program! One great tip I have is to get a couple of NCLEX books during your semesters--especially after level 2. They have great practice questions and really help with the disease processes and nursing school tests. I took about 7 online classes at MGCCC and one was the online speech class during 3rd semester(i put it off for a while  ) . It was a hybrid class so we just went one day a month I think it was, to give our speeches. The rest of the class work was done online. I love online classes! I don't have much experience as a nurse yet, but if you need any advice or have questions I'll be happy to answer them. Good luck and don't stress too hard. Everything will work out....nursing is a great career!!!!

How is the pay for a new nurse in south mississippi or do you even work in this area?

I work on the gulf coast and work weekend days(Friday, Sat, Sun). The hospital I work for has a "weekend special" so you make a little more money per hour to work weekends only. I average about high 20s per hour. I think that is really good pay for a new grad. The pay is getting pretty competitive for new grads down here-- it has recently gone up at most hospitals within the last year. Don't have much to compare it to though. Not sure what other states or cities pay new nurses.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll start nursing school at the Perk campus in the fall. What can I expect the first semester? I have so many questions. I've been looking for someone who graduated from MGCCC...Do you really have to purchase all those books during the first semester..my funds are kinda low. One more question(I'm sorry) Did you have to work while you were in school and if so was it hard.

It is overwhelming and exciting to start nursing school. The best advice I can give is stay organized and write everything down on a calendar somewhere. That is one big thing about nursing school...not that it is extremely difficult but that you have alot to do in a short amount of time. It will seem at times that you will drown in all that you are doing...but just stay organized and it won't be so bad. Organize all of your subject material(notes taken, handouts ect.) for each test into separate small notebooks that way you can review it easily.(I wish someone would have told me these things when I first went in). They give you a list of books to buy during your first semester, and yeah it is expensive:o and if you aren't sure about them just call the secretary of the ADN campus at Perk and ask her exactly which ones you will need to start. AND STUDY STUDY. No, fortunately I didn't have to work during nursing school. That would be very hard. It is very time consuming. After 2nd semester I worked as a nursing assistant during the summer and worked only once a month during 3rd and 4th semesters. Do you have any experience in hospital setting? I didn't-- so I was grateful that I did get the chance to work as an assistant. I don't mind answering questions at all...I know exactly how you feel right now, but once you are in the real world nursing is alot different(Better I think). :roll

I work at a hospital now(3rd year). My director said he will allow me to work whenever I can. I have a B.S. in exercise physiology. I worked in cardiac rehab for about a year so I had to get cetified in basic coronary care and ACLS and that's when I knew I wanted to work in patient care. Now i'm the coordinator of the back safety program...teaching proper lifting techniqes with patient transfers. Do you think any of this experience will help. I'm really excited about nursing school. You always hear how tough it is and I guess it's natural to be a little nervous too.
