What works for your back injury?
I know you have probally have already thought of this but, work peds. Does your facility have any transfer devices( sliding boards, gait belts, roller boards) all these things really help in bed to stretcher transfers and if you are under restrictions follow that. Sound like you are doing all the right things...exercise, pt etc..Our facility has a back safety program and I'm the coordinator. The things I would recommend you already do. Just work within your limits and get all the help you can....

I don't want to gag
Thanks for all the advice...I knew I could count you all. I think I'm going to try that horrible tasting halls and the vicks vapor rub. I hope I get over this or just deal with it better. I can handle anything but the smell and yes I understand the profession that I'm going into and I know there is no way around the smell...I've always wanted to go into nursing so I wont let some smelly poop run me off.

I don't want to gag
I'm a nursing student thats about to start my 2nd sem of ADN. During my first clinical rotation I was giving a bed bath and my patient had a BM and I didn't have a problem cleaning him up but I couldn't help but gag...I really felt bad and now I'm going into the 2nd semester and I would hate to do that in front of a patient again. Do any of you guys/gals how any tips or know anything I could do to help control this.

What is the biggest frustration for nursing students?
As a nursing student I can tell you what frustrates me. This is the first year of teaching for one of my instructors and I can tell. I study and read all the required work and I finished the semester with a B but everytime I would miss questions it came from her material. The distractors that she used on her test questions would include part of the correct answer. For instance to promote wound healing pick what should be included in the diet a)fish b)eggs c)citrus fruit d) tomatoes. She said the correct answer was citrus fruit. In out reading it said citruis fruit would promote collegen formation which would help a wound heal but her question wasn't worded that way. I think she had unfair questions all semester.

I don't know where to begin.
Before I started school I was going to buy a digital recorder, but they are not allowed in my program:nono: . I take good notes and I've been reading over the powerpoints along with the objectives...I was really banking on that recorder though.

I don't know where to begin.
I finished my first week of school last week. We had a medical terminology test and I felt like I did very well. This week we are doing vital signs in the skills lab and I feel pretty confident about that. The problem is the Unit Exam/Lecture Exam. This isn't like any other class I've had where you would get a study guide I only have the listing objectives for each unit. I'm having a hard time getting started. Our first exam is two weeks away and I really want to be prepared but I just don't know how to study for this thing. Any suggestions?:uhoh21:

MS Gulf Coast Comm College
I work at a hospital now(3rd year). My director said he will allow me to work whenever I can. I have a B.S. in exercise physiology. I worked in cardiac rehab for about a year so I had to get cetified in basic coronary care and ACLS and that's when I knew I wanted to work in patient care. Now i'm the coordinator of the back safety program...teaching proper lifting techniqes with patient transfers. Do you think any of this experience will help. I'm really excited about nursing school. You always hear how tough it is and I guess it's natural to be a little nervous too.

MS Gulf Coast Comm College
Thanks for the quick response. I'll start nursing school at the Perk campus in the fall. What can I expect the first semester? I have so many questions. I've been looking for someone who graduated from MGCCC...Do you really have to purchase all those books during the first semester..my funds are kinda low. One more question(I'm sorry) Did you have to work while you were in school and if so was it hard.

Will they hire me?
I'm not a nurse. I start nursing school in the fall. I've worked at this hospital for about 3 years as the coordinator of the back injury prevention program. I have to do in-service after in-service throughout the hospital. Whenever the hospital gets new equipment I train the staff on how to use it properly. I also speak at workshop that talks about taking care of your back.

Will they hire me?
I work as a safety officer at a hospital. I just did a presentation on tranfering patients safely from bed to stretcher. I presented the information to all the nurse managers,DON and my director. I just feel like I did a horrible job. I fumbled over words, could hardly log roll the patient the get the transfer device underneath the patient. This ticked me off:angryfirewhen they would ask me a question the DON would answer for me like it was her presentation. I start nursing school in Fall 06 when I finish I would like to work here but the way that presentation went I don't know if they will hire me. My partner said it was fine and he is satisfied with it. But I wanted to really impress them and I just don't think I did. :smackingf

Bariatric woes
I'm am the coordinator of the back safety program at our hospital. This sounds like a problem that starts with administration. We have beds at our hospital that has a "turn assist" feature. The beds inflates on one side and deflates on the other and this with help in turn any size pt. This transfer is hard because it sounds like your patient is not cooperative. One thing you could do is use a larger draw sheet. You and your partner both stand on the same side and with the sheet underneath the patient you and your parter grab the excess from the other side and pull the patient over(be sure to brace yourself against the bed so you can protect your back) and while the pt is on the rail someone go to the other side and do your nursing stuff. The is a high risk transfer especially with a patient of size and only two people doing the transfer.
