When my children were infants(30 years ago) someone invented these great stickers that discouraged them from touching anything they should not touch. It was really effective, but I have not seen or heard anything about old Mr. YUK in years. I wonder if he is still around and where I could get some stickers if he is. I have an infant grandchild now and have to worry about the same things I worried about many years ago. As you can see I still remember the MR. YUK jingle.

LOL, Oramar! As soon as I saw the intro line on your post, I found myself singing the jingle! I see RN-PA has already responded as to where to get them, and I know that is where I have gotten some in the past. If I am not mistaken, I believe it was one of the docs at Children's that designed the stickers.

Please consider carefully before using something like Mr. Yuk to try to discourage kids from getting into poisons. The cutesy jingles and so forth may have the opposite effect.

Back in the 60s in Pittsburgh there used to be a lot of child deaths due to poisoning. After Mr. YUK was introduced along with an aggressive anti poisoning campaign the deaths fell to ZERO and stayed there for many years. The stickers worked like a charm at my house and if I can find them I will use them. I say they work in combination with responsible adult supervision and reinforcement. I spent a lot of time explaining them to my kids. We never had so much as one incident at my house.

Actually, my kids old Pediatrician helped invent the sticker.

My kids are 12 and 16 and we still call our medicine cupboard the "Mr Yuk cupboard"! Now the stickers are long gone off of it, but the name has stuck.

Not the OP, but thanks for sharing that link! My parents used the stickers when I was little and I knew to stay FAR away from the labeled items. I'd like to order some to use with my own kids.

I cloth diaper my 18mo son and have a diaper cover with Mr. Yuk's pic on the butt.

I LOVED those things!

I also stayed away from anything with the Mr Yuk stickers. My son is 9 now and knows better, but I think I'm gonna have to get some just for the heck of it!!!

I got some in the mail from somewhere once and my kids used them to decorate the house before I could get them on things. I keep everything up high but I do want to get some stickers for them. Thanks for the info.

Interesting link. I remember when parents used to try to get their kids to take medicine by calling it candy! Imagine that disaster in the making. When the Mr. Yuk campaign started (late 60's, early 70's?) the people working on the project tested out various warning type labels to see what kids would shy away from. The traditional skull and cross bones poison label was *attractive* to kids, with the whole pirate connotation. (And I would guess in Pittsburgh it was doubly attractive, as that is the baseball team) Your warning though is a point well taken, you can never be too cautious.

You can get them at a Giant Eagle pharmacy!...They always give them out when they have health fairs and stuff... I just got a load of them when they were at the Pirate Fest this year. They also have a coloring book about Poison control..my little one had a lesson in preschool about Mr YUK and brought some home....They are still out there and local...
