MPH/MBA or Psych NP?

Nurses General Nursing

Hi Everyone,

So, I have finally decided to pursue an advance degree. I have was lucky enough to be accepted to an MPH/MBA program and a PsychNP program. The best part is that the tuition is pretty much covered in exchange for 4 years of service to my current hospital after graduation (which quite frankly is fine since they pay the most in the area and they treat their staff pretty well). Are there any current nurses out here who pursued an MPH degree after a BSN? What are you doing now?

The MBA route means management while the PMHNP means clinical practice. I would be hesitant to take the tuition reimbursement. Why? Well many hospitals (at least in my area ie Florida) do not hire NP's also if their isn't a management position available then your MBA will go underutilized. Consider that if your earned 80K as a nurse, but 115K as a PMHNP then that tuition reimbursement could cost you over 100K, plus the four years of experience lost if you are not able to find a position at your hospital involving an advanced degree.

Specializes in oncology, MS/tele/stepdown.

I've always considered getting an MPH. I just find the curriculum so much more interesting than MSN programs, but I also have no interest in teaching, being an NP, or administration, so it's easier for me to rule all that out. Hope someone weighs in!

Psych NP...all day.

An MPH/MBA may be beneficial if you are already in a management position and are on the upward track at your job. But if you are are a regular RN, I think a Psych NP would be a better use of your time...pays about the same, more job stability and flexibility.
