Moving to Tampa Please Help

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hello All,

I just passed my NCLEX examination from NY and am in the process of beginning the arduous process of license endorsement for Florida. I currently work as a nurse intern in a hospital up north in Pediatrics. I performed the majority of the nursing functions under the supervision of the RN in the past, but now that I have my license everything has changed. I already have a home in the New Tampa area and finally want to make the move. I just wanted some friendly advice as to the best hospitals that are in the area so I can begin to send out my résumé. I know the salary is much less from up north, but I wanted a ball park. How are the benefits ? What is the nurse to patient ratio ? How are the staff of the hospital to which you are referring? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to reading any responses.

Are you looking to practice in peds only?

I've heard very good things about All Children's Hospital. Here's the website:

I think All Chindren's is one of the best peds hospitals around, however it's a tough commute from Tampa.

I'm not familar with Tampa but I personally would go for large not-for-profits like Tampa General and St. Joseph's.

The pay in this area is definately lower than up north. You can probably expect wages in the low 20s/hour.

Okay let me clarify. I work at All kids and the commute from Tampa is CAKE. It's is about 30 min, that includes your walk into the hospital from the parking garage, if you are north of Tampa, it does get crazier...the good news is usually when your shift change occurs, there isn't much traffic (7am/7pm....NOT MUCH GOING ON). The benefits to me are reasonable...insurance is affordable, 401k, pension, sweet time off (1 day per pay period so appx 26 days off a year).....and I really love the people here, we are all here for the same reasons, to help kids. Plus we take kids that most hospitals (like St. Joe's and TGH) because they may not have insurance. We don't care why they are coming here, as long as they come here. I heavily encourage your to take a look at All kids, I live in New Port Richey and drive 45 min each way just to have the daily experience that I have. Any other questios PM me. I could always refer you to some HR people.

Thanks

Thank You for your help. I am going to look into those hospitals. I would prefer remaining in PEDS or Women's Health. I have the most experience in those areas. Does anyone else have any other suggestions ? I am also looking for a hospital that would offer tuition reimbursement....also interested in vacation time, sick time, medical....... etc.....

Tampa General and St. Joseph's are good hospitals in tampa for peds also you have UCH. St. Jose and TGH pay 20-21hr. base after completing the 12 week programs. I have been told that TGH kicks ass for new grads being a teaching hospital.

For you moving to New Tampa UCH would be just down the road.

Okay well I want to offer more input and really steer you towards All Childrens......Klein is correct though, Tampa General does have a wonderful new grad program, All Childrens also offers new grads positions all the time here, base pay is comparable with all those. They offer as I mentioned before its about $20 per pay period for your insurance, 401k, pension plan, flex spending, tuition reimbursement, scholarships (for employees and relatives of employees which you are not obligated to pay back), and did I mention the best peds hospital to work at all around the tampa bay area. Can you tell I'm proud of where I work? What does that tell you?

I work at TGH. They just increased their rates across the board for the RN's. Health insurance is affordable, I pay ~ $50 per pay period for UHC PPO. 26 PTO's per year, $4000 for tution each year (they pay up front). Plenty of OT if you want it.
