I can't give you much information regarding EDs, but much will depend on where you are looking to live and what type of ED you'd like to practice in. The two big hospital systems in St. Louis are SSM and BJC, with other hospitals in the county and other outlying areas as well. There are plenty of hospitals to choose from in this area no matter what your wishes! As far as salary goes, I was hired at a SSM facility last year with three years experience at $22.15 base. Few hospitals offer additional salary for BSN, but you may get more for your CEN.
What kind of hospital are you looking for? And what area of St. L are you moving to? I worked agency for awhile and went to most hospitals in the area, although not in any EDs.
Definitely check out the BJC and SSM websites. St. John's Mercy also. Both BJC and SSM have multiple hospitals in their systems, ranging from smaller suburb hospitals to large city ones.
I've been at SSM for years now, and frequently hear from formwe BJC employees that they prefer the culture at SSM. (Of course, not working for BJC, I can't say whether or not they hear the exact opposie claim.)
For your hubby, Abbott is the main ambulance company in the area that's not specifically attached to a particular county or town. Several of the EDs in the area hire paramedics as well.
Level I Trauma Centers....St.Louis University ER sees it all. As a borderline inner city hospital it sees it all. IF you are an adrenalin addict this place is for you. Same probably with St. John's Mercy Hospital. It has more of the upper crust emergency patients but I'm sure they "see it all" as well. Both are medical school learning/practicing grounds....if I were 30 years younger I'd work both.
SSM is an accident waiting to happen, especially at St. Mary's in Richmond Heights. Went through major changes a few years back and I don't know what the environment is like today. Not a real supportive management system. The old cliche of "a knife in your back" says it all. They are not Level I's and stay busy at a much slower level of care needed. Median age range must be in the 80's. Look that up for your benefit.
Keep an open mind. Most jobs are what you put into them.

I am an ER/trauma (CEN) nurse with 3.5 years experience and my husband and I are moving to St Louis in the next few months to be closer to family. I would appreciate any information on the hospitals there, especially from former or current employees. I would like to know stuff like the ER patient ratios, salary, benefits, administrative support, turnover rates and really anything you want to add. Also, if there are any agency nurses in that area, I would like to know about that as well.
AND... while I am at it... my husband is a paramedic... anything you can tell me that he needs to know?
Thanks for your help!!
