Moving to Durham, NC from Los Angeles

Published

Hey my North Carolina family,

I'll be a nursing student at DUSON (Duke University School of Nursing) in the fall. My family and I are having a devil of a time finding suitable housing. What you don't know is I live with my extended family and have to accommodate my grandmother-in-law's special needs.

Does anyone have housing connections that I might tap into to find a nice 4 or 5 bedroom townhouse or house? I'd like to geographically relocate within 10 miles of the Duke Nursing School. Initially only two of the three adults will be paying rent (or mortgage). Any suggestions??

Please PM me if need be.

Thanks

What is your price range? Coming from CA it probably won't be too much of a shocker. LOL

Hey

I have lived in Durham two miles away from the hospital for four years. I love Durham and the community. Many people have a negative opinion about Durham but I have never had a problem. If you would like to live close to Duke check out these neighborhoods; Old West Durham, Watts-Hillandale, Trinity Park, Duke Park, Northgate Park, Forest Hills. The Duke Community housing website is also a good resource. By the way, Durham has the lowest cost of housing in the area.

Good luck

You might be able to find something in Durham. Cary is another option. Chapel Hill is too expensive. A three bedroom townhouse in my CH neighborhood starts at 400k. A townhouse, seriously. And you will be making a LOT less money down here, be prepared for that.

We moved from the Bay area in CA to NC and recently purchased a home in North Durham which is close to Duke. House prices are resonable certainly compared to prices of homes in CA. I know there are couple of homes for sale in our subdivision, Autumn Ridge and there is another subdivision we looked at up the street which is called Ashfield place and had a few new homes for sale. All the best in your search. NC is different from CA but I do like it here. I used to live in Los Angeles myself.

I highly recommend Old West Durham and Watts Hillendale... great neighborhoods, affordable, and within walking/biking distance to the school (parking is a mess at Duke)
