Ladies and Gents, I am a British nurse .I am due to start working for Mount sanai in chicago . I am worried ,is the nursing different ? how is the cost of living. Please anybody:uhoh3:

Just so you know,

Mt Sinia is across the street from Schwab Rehab, and just up the street (mile or two) from the Medical District- Rush, Uof Illinois, Cook County.

The west side neighborhoods have been gentrifying & there is significant new construction on the south & west sides. South Loop, West Loop, Bridgeport, Bronzeville, Lawndale, all have it happening. Barack Obama lives on the south side, the mayor in the South Loop so there are plenty of good neighborhoods to chose from. Depends what you like, and what you're looking for.

I live in Oak Park and I think it's a great neighnorhood. Since I'm new to the Chicago myself, I know so much about other places. Just a little info about Oak Park, they have a nice park and BIG library (nice and clean) I go there all the time. The rent is not bad either. You can rent a studio for about $600-800 or rent one bedroom for about 700-1000. Oak Park offer a lot of service for their resident. EX: free CPR class (if you are not a resident of Oak Park you pay $50). Here is the link for Oak Park area. http://www.oak-park.us/

Hello Gen & Little Cat,

I am also moving to Illinois this week coming from New York.

I would just like to ask if you have any idea how to go about the reciprocity application in Illinois?

I heard that it really takes time for a nurse to obtain a license thru reciprocity?

Also, assuming I already have a board license (NCLEX passer), can i immediately work in Illinois?

Your feedback will be higly apprciated.

For a brief while I stayed on your Island, (in Donyatt, Near Ilminster/West Country near the moors).

Okay, if you are coming to work at Mt. Sinai I sould suggest that you may want to live more in the "city" and research the Chicago Neighborhoods to find the one that is the best fit for you. Mt. Sinai is located West if I believe and is a low income area and from what I hear of my classmates who did clinicals there you will learn lots.

Here is one of my favorite maps when trying to figure out where is where in the city: http://neighborhoods.chicago.il.us/

Once you compare the map to the map of where your hospital is you can see the immediate neighborhoods and which ones you want to live in or near. Remember that even living 5-10 miles away can seem like a "commute" sometimes. Currently I live in Lincoln Park and while it is enjoyable, the rush hour traffic can seem stifling in a few spots!

Anyone have an opinion on the Humbolt Park neighborhood?

Am applying to Rush's NP program and then who knows which hopsital to work p/t, but I know I won't be able to afford the Lakeview area...

It's a decent neighborhood for the most part. Lots of new construction going on. Short hop to Lincoln Park, Wicker Park neighborhoods

Also, check out the near west side/west loop, Oak Park, Forest Park.

Lot's of Rush people live in the Oak Park area.

Rush used to grant tuition waivers to their part time weekend nurses. Might be worth checking into.
