Moving to Brooklyn- need some advice!

Published

Hi allnurses community!

This is my first post!

I will graduating with a BSN this May and plan on moving to Brooklyn, New York. I have no connections whatsoever and know very little about the hospitals in Brooklyn. I have not started the application process so creating this topic is the first part of my research! Any good hospitals that I should check out? I also want to become a pmhnp so I would absolutely love to start out on a psych unit! Any good psych/mental health facilities?

Thanks all!

It's going to be really, really difficult to find a hospital job in Brooklyn as a new grad. (sorry to be a downer!) Look into the HHC facilities (NYC public hospitals) and Kings County Hospital for psych. Good luck! :)

Check out Brookdale Hospital and Jamaica Hospital in Queens they hire new grads. Good luck!!!

Thanks for your replies. I will definitely look into your suggestions!

Dont move to NYC without a sure job unless A) you have someone that will house you and feed you for free until you get a job and can move out or B) you will have a non-RN job until you get hired for RN. RN jobs for new grads are hard to find and the hiring process takes a lot longer than for experience RN so you are looking at being broke for at least 2 months (common time frame from interview until hire/background check with HR).

That being said, since your interest is in Psych, definitely check out city hospitals (NYC HHC). They are great experience as you get ALL types of patients including the most severely Psychiatric and homeless. With this being the case, they are always hiring Psych RNs (new grads welcome) as there is high turnover of RNs since not many people can handle the patients. Kings County Hospital and Woodhull Hospital are always posting jobs for Psych RNs (posted as Behavioral Health, which is to say Psych in a non-stigmatizing way). Check out employment.nychhc.org , make sure your resume is in order and call HR to see when their next behavioral health open house is. Good luck!
